Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Studer S23 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Studer S23 is a CNC cylindrical grinding machine with a 175 mm (6.9 in) center height, built with 650 mm or 1,000 mm (25.6 or 39.4 in) between centers and rated for 120 kg (264 lb) between centers. The wheel spindle is listed at 12.5 kW (16.76 hp) maximum and 3,200 rpm, and the cross slide has 285 mm (11.2 in) of X travel.
What separates one S23 from another is the wheelhead. The universal wheelhead swivels on its B axis from -30° to 190°, indexed either by a manual Hirth coupling in 2.5° steps or by an automatic one in 1° steps. The alternative is a fixed wheelhead set at 0°, 15° or 30°. A shop grinding one family of shafts can work with the fixed head. A shop that wants to swing from an external wheel to an internal spindle in the same clamping needs the universal one. Table swivel of up to 8.5° is an option and not part of the base machine.
Internal grinding is covered by two spindle families. Belt-driven spindles run at 20,000 or 40,000 rpm and fit a dia. 100 mm mounting bore, while motor spindles run at 42,000, 60,000 or 90,000 rpm in a dia. 120 mm mounting bore. The workhead choice matters as much. The universal workhead comes with an MT5 or ISO50 taper and the chuck workhead with MT4, and bar capacity is dia. 30 mm (1.18 in) with MT5, dia. 50 mm (1.97 in) with ISO50 and dia. 26 mm (1.02 in) on the chuck workhead. The tailstock is MT3 or MT4.
Rapid traverse is 10,000 mm/min (394 in/min) on X and 20,000 mm/min (788 in/min) on Z. The control is the Fanuc 0i-TF PLUS with C.O.R.E. OS, and the total connected load is 22 kVA, a figure to pass to whoever plans the electrical supply.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Two lengths on one 175 mm (6.9 in) center height: 650 mm or 1,000 mm (25.6 or 39.4 in) between centers
- Universal wheelhead swivels from -30° to 190° on the B axis, with automatic Hirth indexing in 1° steps available
- Internal grinding spindles from 20,000 rpm belt-driven up to 90,000 rpm motor spindles
- Workhead choice of MT5 or ISO50 on the universal type or MT4 on the chuck type, with bar capacity up to dia. 50 mm (1.97 in) on ISO50
- Rapid traverse of 20,000 mm/min (788 in/min) on Z and 10,000 mm/min (394 in/min) on X
Limitations
- Workpiece weight between centers is limited to 120 kg (264 lb)
- Table swivel up to 8.5° is an option, so it has to be ordered if tapers are to be ground by swivelling the table
- The fixed wheelhead offers only 0°, 15° or 30°, and the manual Hirth version of the universal head indexes in 2.5° steps instead of 1°
- X travel is 285 mm (11.2 in) and center height 175 mm (6.9 in), which caps the part diameters and wheelhead combinations that fit
- Needs a total connected load of 22 kVA

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Two: 650 mm or 1,000 mm (25.6 or 39.4 in) between centers. Both share the 175 mm (6.9 in) center height and the 120 kg (264 lb) limit for workpieces held between centers.
02
The universal wheelhead has a B axis that swivels from -30° to 190°, indexed by a manual Hirth coupling in 2.5° steps or an automatic one in 1° steps. The fixed wheelhead is set at 0°, 15° or 30° and does not swivel during the cycle. The universal head is the one to choose when internal and external grinding are combined on the same part.
03
Belt-driven spindles at 20,000 or 40,000 rpm, which fit a dia. 100 mm mounting bore, and motor spindles at 42,000, 60,000 or 90,000 rpm, which fit a dia. 120 mm mounting bore. The mounting bore differs between the two families, so decide on the spindle type before ordering the wheelhead.
04
The universal workhead is available with MT5 or ISO50 and the chuck workhead with MT4. Bar capacity is dia. 30 mm (1.18 in) with MT5, dia. 50 mm (1.97 in) with ISO50 and dia. 26 mm (1.02 in) on the chuck workhead. The tailstock is MT3 or MT4.
05
The control is the Fanuc 0i-TF PLUS with C.O.R.E. OS. Studer lists a total connected load of 22 kVA. The wheel spindle is rated 12.5 kW (16.76 hp) maximum at up to 3,200 rpm.
