Studer S151

The Studer S151 is a CNC cylindrical grinding machine with a 275 mm (10.8 inch) center height that swings workpieces up to 550 mm (21.6 inch) in diameter. It is built in two sizes, for workpiece lengths of 700 mm (27.6 inch) or 1,300 mm (51.2 inch), and carries up to 250 kg (550 lbs).

Diameter is the reason to choose this model. The 550 mm swing comes with 500 mm (19.7 inch) of X travel, so the cross slide can take a wheel from the bore of a large part out to features near its rim. The weight limit deserves equal attention. A solid steel blank at full diameter would pass 250 kg within a short length, which points the envelope at housings, rings and hollow spindle parts. Ask Studer whether the weight figure includes the chuck or fixture.

Z travel is 500 mm (19.7 inch) on the smaller size and 700 mm (27.5 inch) on the larger, at up to 20,000 mm/min (787 inch/min), the same rate as X. Since the longer machine accepts 1,300 mm parts on 700 mm of Z, the grinding happens at one end of a long component and not along it.

Spindle figures are 18 kW (24 hp) of maximum power and 120,000 rpm of maximum speed, with wheels up to 300 mm (12 inch) in diameter and 32 mm (1.3 inch) wide. The highest speed is for small internal wheels and the largest wheel is for slower spindles. The B axis has a swiveling range of 330°. The S141 carries the same 18 kW (24 hp) and 120,000 rpm with 425 mm (16.7 inch) of X travel, for shops that do not need 500 mm.
