Overview

A Ø23.6 in (Ø600 mm) hydrostatic turntable and a maximum grinding radius of R12.8 in (R325 mm) define the Chevalier FRG-600S, the mid-size model of the FRG rotary surface grinders. The radius is larger than half the table, so the wheel can run slightly past the table edge and finish a part that covers the whole chuck.

Rotary grinding changes how the cut behaves. With the work turning at 10 to 150 rpm under a wheel that feeds in from the rim, contact is continuous and the lay pattern is concentric. Surface speed at the work falls toward the centre, which is why Chevalier's adaptive finish program adjusts table rotation, infeed speed and grinding wheel speed during the cycle.

The table takes 882 lb (400 kg). Under it, hydrostatic bearings replace rolling elements; over it, the wheelhead has 16.9 in (430 mm) of vertical travel at 0 to 6.56 fpm (0 to 2,000 mm/min) and 15 in (380 mm) of cross travel. Maximum grinding height is 13.8 in (350 mm), and the table surface stands 36.2 in (920 mm) off the floor, a comfortable height for loading by hand.

Power comes from a 10 hp (7.5 kW) spindle motor turning a Ø14 in wheel at 500 to 2,200 rpm. Operators can balance the wheel in the machine. Net weight is 7,700 lb (3,500 kg), and the control is the SMART iControl.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Ø23.6 in (Ø600 mm) hydrostatic table with a grinding radius of R12.8 in (R325 mm)
  • 882 lb (400 kg) table load on a machine weighing 7,700 lb (3,500 kg)
  • Six Class 7 (P4) angular contact ball bearings support the spindle, per the maker
  • Linear guideways, ballscrew and directly coupled servo motor on both wheelhead movements
  • Table surface 36.2 in (920 mm) from the floor for manual loading

Limitations

  • Cross travel is 15 in (380 mm), the same as on the smaller FRG-400S
  • Spindle motor is 10 hp (7.5 kW); the FRG-800S has 15 hp (11 kW)
  • Maximum grinding height is 13.8 in (350 mm)
  • Floor space of 110.2 in x 110.2 in x 102.8 in is large for a 600 mm table

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the table size and load of the FRG-600S?

Table size is Ø23.6 in (Ø600 mm) and maximum table load 882 lb (400 kg). The table turns at 10 to 150 rpm. Maximum grinding radius is listed as R12.8 in (R325 mm) and maximum grinding height as 13.8 in (350 mm).

02 Which axes are CNC controlled?

The table lists a transverse movement (Z) of 15 in (380 mm) and a wheelhead elevation (Y) of 16.9 in (430 mm), with feed speeds of 0 to 9.75 fpm and 0 to 6.56 fpm. Chevalier says both mechanisms use linear guideways and a ballscrew combined with a servo motor for direct transmission. The control is the SMART iControl.

03 Can the wheel be balanced on the machine?

Yes. Chevalier lists in-machine dynamic balancing, which allows operators to adjust the grinding wheel balance and limit wheel vibration to less than 1 um. The wheel itself is Ø14 in x 1.5 in x Ø5 (Ø355 x 38 x Ø127 mm).

04 When is the FRG-800S the better choice?

When the part is heavier or wider than this machine allows. The FRG-800S has a Ø31.5 in (Ø800 mm) table that carries 2,204 lb (1,000 kg), a 15 hp (11 kW) spindle and 25 in (635 mm) of cross travel. The FRG-800S is also about twice the machine to install, at 14,100 lb (6,400 kg) against 7,700 lb (3,500 kg) for the FRG-600S.
