Studer S22

The Studer S22 is a CNC cylindrical grinding machine sized around a large wheel: up to 610 mm (24 inch) in diameter and 160 mm (6.3 inch) wide, on a 15 kW (20.5 hp) spindle that runs to 3,200 rpm. It takes workpieces up to 700 mm (27.5 inch) long, 449 mm (17.6 inch) in diameter and 150 kg (330 lbs), with 800 mm between centers and a 225 mm (8.8 inch) center height.

Wheel width is the figure to start from. A 160 mm wheel can plunge a long seat, or several diameters at once, in a single infeed where a narrower wheel would have to traverse. That is where the cycle time of a repeat part is won. The S31 shares the 3,200 rpm limit with 11.5 kW (15.6 hp), so the S22 has roughly 30% more spindle power to put behind the wider contact.

The axis list goes beyond X and Z. Studer gives a Y axis with 100 mm (3.9 inch) of travel and an A axis with a 26° swiveling range, alongside a B axis with a 195° range. An A axis tilts the wheel out of the horizontal plane, which is the motion needed to set a wheel to a helix angle, so these rows matter most to buyers looking at thread or form work. The table does not say whether both axes are on every configuration. Have that confirmed in the quotation.

Travel is 310 mm (12.2 inch) in X and 850 mm (33.5 inch) in Z. The Z axis moves at up to 30,000 mm/min (1,181 inch/min), twice the 15,000 mm/min (590 inch/min) of X, which shortens the moves between diameters on a stepped shaft. Note that the 700 mm workpiece length is shorter than the 800 mm between centers, so plan jobs around the smaller figure.
