Overview

The Quicktech MiniMax 25i GBL is the version of the maker's 25 mm (1.0 in) automatic lathe on which the guide bush is an option. In the four-column MiniMax 25i table the guide bush row reads ○ for the other three versions and △ (option) for this one. No other row separates it from the turning-only Eco.

Why would a buyer want that? A guide bush supports the bar right at the tool, which is what lets a sliding-headstock machine turn long, slender parts. It also has costs. The bar must be ground or drawn to a close tolerance to slide through the bush, and a length of every bar is left over as a remnant because the collet cannot feed it past the bush. For short parts those costs buy nothing. A machine run without the bush grips the bar in the spindle collet alone, accepts ordinary bar stock and wastes less of it, at the price of rigidity on long work.

The figures in the table are otherwise those of the series. The spindle runs to 8,000 rpm on 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) with an SR-25R chuck and a 27 mm (1.1 in) bore. Tooling is 7 OD tools on □12 mm shanks and 6 ID tools at Ø20, with no motorized tools and no sub-spindle in this column. Travels are 160 mm (6.3 in) in X1, 300 mm (11.8 in) in Y1 and 100 mm (3.9 in) in Z1.

The maker does not print a separate turning length for running with and without the bush; the only length row is a maximum for front ejection of 100 mm (3.9 in). Ask Quicktech for the usable part length in each mode. The control is a Mitsubishi M80 and the weight is 2,000 kg (4,409 lb).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Guide bush listed as △ (option), so the machine can be specified for short parts without one
  • 8,000 rpm spindle on a 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) motor
  • 7 OD tools (□12 mm) and 6 ID tools (Ø20) on the gang slide
  • Compact 2,000 kg (4,409 lb) machine with a 110 L coolant tank

Limitations

  • The guide bush is not part of the standard machine in this column
  • No motorized tools and no sub-spindle
  • Bar capacity of 25 mm (1.0 in) and Z1 travel of 100 mm (3.9 in)
  • The table gives no part-length figure for work without the guide bush
06

Best For

Short turned parts from 25 mm (1.0 in) bar where a guide bush adds no benefit Shops that want to run standard-tolerance bar stock Mixed work that sometimes needs the optional guide bush for longer parts

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is different about the MiniMax 25i GBL?

The guide bush row. The table marks it △ (option) for the GBL and ○ for the Twin, Mill and Eco versions. Every other figure in the GBL column matches the MiniMax 25i Eco: 8,000 rpm, 7 OD and 6 ID tools, no live tools and no sub-spindle.

02 When does it make sense to run without a guide bush?

On short parts. The bush is there to support long, slender work at the cutting point; a short part held close to the collet does not need it. Without a bush the bar does not have to be ground to slide through it, and the unusable bar end is shorter. This is general practice with sliding-headstock machines, so confirm with Quicktech how this model is set up for each mode.

03 Does the GBL have live tools?

Not in the table. The motorized tool rows are blank for this version. The MiniMax 25i Mill is the single-spindle version with 6 motorized tools, and the MiniMax 25i Twin adds a sub-spindle with 3 more.

04 What are the spindle and travel figures?

Maximum bar working diameter is 25 mm (1.0 in) with a 27 mm (1.1 in) spindle bore and 8,000 rpm. X1 travel is 160 mm (6.3 in), Y1 is 300 mm (11.8 in) and Z1 is 100 mm (3.9 in). Maximum length for front ejection is 100 mm (3.9 in).
