Overview
The Citizen Cincom R04 is an ultra-compact sliding headstock CNC automatic lathe designed for micro-precision turned parts with a maximum machining diameter of 4mm. Sharing its platform with the R01, the R04 extends the R-series capacity to cover the broader range of micro components that fall between 1mm and 4mm—the sweet spot for watch components, micro-medical devices, electronic contacts, and precision instrument parts. This is the micro Swiss machine that most shops will reach for when part diameters are too small for the B12 but too large for the R01's extreme 1mm limit.
The R04 matches the R01's impressive 20,000 RPM main and back spindle speeds, delivering the high cutting speeds essential for productive machining at micro diameters. At 4mm diameter, 20,000 RPM provides a surface speed of approximately 251 m/min—ideal for aggressive cutting in brass, aluminum, and free-machining steels, and workable for stainless steel and titanium with appropriate tooling. The spindle bore is 9mm, and maximum machining length reaches 40mm per chucking. Spindle drive power is 0.75/1.1 kW, appropriately sized for the cutting forces encountered at micro diameters.
The R04 carries 17 tool positions including rotary tools at 8,000 RPM for cross-drilling, micro-milling, and off-center features. Front drilling reaches 3mm diameter with M3 tapping, while rotary tools handle 2mm drilling and M2 tapping. The back spindle accepts workpieces up to 4mm with 10mm protrusion, providing 2mm back drilling and M2.6 back tapping for secondary features. This tooling complement handles the surprisingly complex geometries found in modern micro components—watch parts with eccentric holes, medical pins with cross-features, and electronic contacts with multiple faces.
At 900 kg with 4 kVA power consumption and a 1,000mm center height, the R04 shares the R01's minimal footprint. Rapid feed rates reach 30 m/min across all axes. The 8mm square turning tools are scaled for micro-precision work. For the majority of micro-machining applications, the R04's 4mm capacity provides significantly more versatility than the R01's 1mm limit while maintaining the same micro-optimized spindle speeds, tooling, and machine dynamics. This makes the R04 the more practical choice for shops entering micro Swiss-type production.

Frequently Asked Questions
01
A new Citizen Cincom R04 typically runs $80,000-$150,000 depending on options and configuration. The R04 and R01 share the same platform and price range, with the primary difference being the bar capacity. The R04 is the more commonly specified of the two R-series machines due to its broader 4mm capacity. Used R04 machines are rare on the secondary market.
02
Choose the R04 unless your parts are exclusively under 1mm diameter. The R04's 4mm capacity covers virtually all micro-precision components while maintaining the same 20,000 RPM spindles, 17 tools, and micro-optimized platform. The R01's 1mm limit makes it a specialist machine for sub-millimeter watch and micro-electronics components only. Most shops entering micro Swiss production should start with the R04.
03
The R04 and B12 serve different scale ranges. The R04 handles 1-4mm parts at 20,000 RPM with micro-optimized dynamics, while the B12 handles 1-12mm parts at 12,000 RPM with standard Swiss-scale tooling. For parts under 4mm, the R04 provides better performance due to its higher spindle speeds and micro-scale design. For parts between 4-12mm, the B12 is the necessary step up. There is minimal overlap in their practical application ranges.
04
The R04 is capable of holding single-digit micron tolerances on diameter and length dimensions when properly set up with quality tooling and stable environmental conditions. At micro diameters, thermal stability, vibration isolation, and tooling quality become the primary factors determining achievable tolerances. Many micro Swiss operations maintain temperature-controlled environments for consistent sub-5-micron accuracy.
05
The R04 requires a micro-format bar feeder designed for small-diameter stock up to 4mm. Standard Swiss bar feeders cannot handle material this small reliably. Specialized micro bar feeders from LNS, IEMCA, and other manufacturers offer models designed for ultra-small diameters. The 9mm spindle bore accepts the micro bar feeder interface required for reliable material feeding.
06
Yes. The R04 is widely used in the watch and clock industry for producing stems, pivots, pinions, crown tubes, and other precision movement components. The 20,000 RPM spindle speeds deliver the surface finishes required for watch-grade parts, and the 17 tool positions handle the complex features found in modern watch movement components. The 4mm bar capacity covers the majority of watch component diameters.
