Overview

Twelve feet wide, eighteen feet long and up to 40 in (1,016 mm) of Z: the Onsrud 216GW12 shares the widest tall-stroke table in the 3-axis G-Series chart with the forty-foot 480GW12. Its table is 216 in (5,487 mm) by 144 in (3,658 mm).

Onsrud lists it with 28 in (711 mm) and 40 in strokes on a single frame, 323 in (8,205 mm) long, 224 in (5,690 mm) wide and 167 in (4,242 mm) high. A frame that wide and that tall is a gantry crane in all but name, and it should be planned like one: floor loading, clear height, and a way to get large workpieces under the bridge.

Why buy width and height together? Because some work is big in every direction. Hull and deck patterns, large formwork and full-width panels on tall jigs are examples. The low-stroke 240GW12 has the same width with two more feet of table, and it is the better choice whenever the part is flat.

Standard vacuum is 5 zones. The spindle is 18 hp (13.4 kW) at 24,000 rpm, tool capacity 12. Onsrud's upgrade list for the series adds a 24 hp (17.9 kW) spindle, up to 4 spindles, a second tool changer and a second gantry, though two gantries on an eighteen-foot bed leave each little room.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 216 in (5,487 mm) by 144 in (3,658 mm) table: the full twelve-foot width at the tall strokes
  • 28 in (711 mm) or 40 in (1,016 mm) Z-stroke
  • 5 vacuum zones as standard
  • 24 hp (17.9 kW) spindle optional

Limitations

  • Frame of 323 in (8,205 mm) by 224 in (5,690 mm), and 167 in (4,242 mm) high
  • Two gantries have little room on this bed length
  • Flat work is better served by the longer 240GW12

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How wide is the Onsrud 216GW12?

The table is 144 in (3,658 mm) in Y and the frame is 224 in (5,690 mm) wide. Table X is 216 in (5,487 mm) and the machine is 323 in (8,205 mm) long.

02 Which strokes are available on the 216GW12?

28 in (711 mm) and 40 in (1,016 mm). Onsrud lists the machine at 167 in (4,242 mm) high for both, so the taller stroke does not add to the height in the maker's table.

03 When is the 240GW12 a better choice than the 216GW12?

When the work is flat. The 240GW12 has 240 in (6,096 mm) of table X on the same width, with 11 in or 18 in of Z, and its machine height is lower. The 216GW12 is for parts that need the tall stroke.

04 How many vacuum zones does the 216GW12 have?

5 as standard, the same as the 216GW8 and 216GW10. On a twelve-foot-wide table each zone covers a large area, and Onsrud offers custom zones for work that needs a different layout.
