How much does the Niigata PN400 cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Niigata PN400 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Niigata PN400 is a compact horizontal machining center with a 400 mm × 400 mm pallet and box-type slideways, yet its rapid traverse is 61 m/min (2,402 ipm). That combination is unusual. Sliding guides are normally chosen for damping and accepted as slow; here Niigata pairs them with φ50 ball screws using a ball return system to get both.
The working volume is small and nearly cubic: 630 mm in X, 600 mm in Y and 660 mm in Z, for a workpiece up to φ630 mm × 700 mm weighing no more than 400 kg (882 lb). The table is an NC table with 0.001° indexing.
Niigata fits a BT40 spindle and is direct about its purpose: a #40 main shaft with power comparable to a #50. The standard spindle turns 10,000 min-1 with 303 N·m (223 lb-ft) and a maximum output of 37 kW (49.6 hp), carried in large-diameter ball bearings with direct lubrication. A 15,000 min-1 spindle is an option and keeps the same torque and output figures. The slideways are hand-scraped, which Niigata presents as the source of the machine's straightness and perpendicularity.
Idle time is attacked from the tool changer as well. Tool-to-tool time is 1.2 seconds with a 4 kg tool and 1.7 seconds with a 12 kg tool, and the ATC control reads the tool length to set the shutter opening and the Z-axis retraction, so short tools do not wait for a full-stroke move. The magazine holds 40 tools as standard, with 60, 88 or 126 as options.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 61 m/min (2,402 ipm) rapid traverse on a machine with angular (box) slideways
- BT40 spindle with 303 N·m (223 lb-ft) and 37 kW (49.6 hp) maximum output
- Tool-to-tool time of 1.2 seconds with a 4 kg tool
- ATC timing adjusts to tool length, shortening the Z retraction for short tools
- NC table with 0.001° indexing in the standard specification
Limitations
- Pallet load is limited to 400 kg (882 lb) and the workpiece to φ630 mm × 700 mm
- The standard magazine holds 40 tools; 60, 88 and 126 are options
- 15,000 min-1 requires the optional high-speed spindle; the standard one stops at 10,000 min-1

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The pallet is 400 mm × 400 mm and carries up to 400 kg (882 lb). The maximum workpiece is φ630 mm in swing diameter by 700 mm in height, and the axes travel 630 mm, 600 mm and 660 mm in X, Y and Z.
02
Niigata describes an angular slide structure on a highly rigid base, with sliding surfaces finished by hand scraping. Despite that, rapid traverse is 61 m/min, which the maker credits to a feed system with large-diameter φ50 ball screws and a ball return system.
03
Two BT40 spindles appear in Niigata's table. The standard spindle runs to 10,000 min-1 and the optional high-speed spindle to 15,000 min-1. Both are listed with a maximum torque of 303 N·m and a maximum output of 37 kW.
04
The PN500 is the same design one size up: a 500 mm × 500 mm pallet, 500 kg, travels of 800 mm, 750 mm and 800 mm, and a workpiece of φ800 mm × 1,000 mm. Spindle, rapids and magazine are the same on both, so the choice comes down to part size.
