Overview

The Nexturn NST56 is a three-path automatic lathe for 56 mm (2.2 in) bar, with a main spindle rated 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) and a 12 station turret working alongside a gang type tool post and a sub spindle. Turning length is 150 mm (5.9 in) and both spindles run to 5,000 rpm.

Why a turret on a bar machine of this kind? A gang post is quick but holds only so many tools near a large bar. The NST56 keeps a small gang post, four OD tools and four cross live tools, for the short moves, and adds a turret on its own three axes for everything else. Nexturn says the turret has an independent drive, indexes by servo motor without lifting, and accepts a live tool at any of its 12 stations. Turret and gang post can cut together while the back working station, seven tools with three of them live, finishes the previous part on the sub spindle.

The spindle is built for the bar size. Nexturn describes a built-in main motor with a hydraulic disc brake and an oil cooling system, and gives the bar remnant as less than 80 mm. The sub spindle is 3.7 / 5.5 kW (5.0 / 7.4 hp). On-centre drilling is listed at 20 mm (0.8 in) with M16 tapping, while gang, turret and back-end live tools are held to 16 mm, 16 mm and 13 mm (0.5 in).

Plan the installation early. The machine weighs 6,400 kg (14,109 lb), draws 45 kVA and holds 450 L of coolant. Chip conveyor, automatic fire extinguisher and a high pressure pump are optional accessories.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) built-in main spindle motor for 56 mm (2.2 in) bar
  • 12 station turret with live tooling at every station, on its own three axes
  • Three-path control: turret, gang tool post and back working station can cut at the same time
  • 20 mm (0.8 in) on-centre drilling and M16 tapping
  • Stated bar remnant of less than 80 mm

Limitations

  • Turning length is 150 mm (5.9 in), where the NST45 offers 340 mm (13.4 in)
  • Spindle speed is limited to 5,000 rpm
  • Live-tool drilling in the turret and gang post stops at 16 mm (0.6 in) and M12
  • 6,400 kg (14,109 lb) and a 45 kVA supply
  • Chip conveyor is an optional accessory

Best For

Short, heavy bar parts up to 56 mm (2.2 in) in diameter Hydraulic and pneumatic components with many drilled and milled features Parts needing more tool stations than a gang-type machine provides Volume work where overlapping operations on three paths cut the cycle

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What size parts is the NST56 meant for?

Bar up to 56 mm (2.2 in) in diameter with a turning length of 150 mm (5.9 in). The main spindle drills to 20 mm (0.8 in) and taps to M16, and a cross disc mill can be 50 mm (2.0 in) across. Nexturn states a remnant of less than 80 mm at the end of the bar.

02 How does the NST56 turret work with the gang tool post?

They are separate tool carriers on separate paths. The gang post holds four OD and four cross live tools; the turret has 12 stations and three-axis control. Nexturn lists simultaneous cross milling and cross off-centre machining with the turret, and three-path control lets the back working station run at the same time.

03 What is the difference between the NST56 and the NST67?

Bar capacity. The NST67 takes 67 mm (2.6 in) bar and the NST56 takes 56 mm (2.2 in). The remaining rows of the table are the same for both, including the 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) main spindle, 5,000 rpm and the 6,400 kg (14,109 lb) weight.

04 Which control is fitted to the NST56?

A FANUC 31i-B with eleven controlled axes, designated X1, Z1, Y1, X2, Z2, Y2, X3, Z3, Y3, C1 and C3 in the brochure. It stores 128 sets of tool offsets and up to 1,000 registered programs, with a minimum input increment of 0.001 mm.
