Overview
The Messer Element 400L Unitized is a fiber laser plate machine built for bevel cutting, on a unitized frame with an enclosure and a shuttle table. Working widths are 6 ft, 8 ft and 10 ft, working length goes up to 50 ft (15.2 m), and laser power is offered up to 20 kW for sheet up to 2 in (50 mm) thick.
The Bevel-U head is the reason the machine exists. It tilts the laser to +/- 50° and adjusts the angle continuously while cutting, producing I, V, Y, X and K edge shapes for weld preparation. Messer lists Y and K preparations with a land height from 1.5 mm for automated robot welding. The actual angle available depends on material, thickness and bevel type, so a thick K-bevel needs confirming with the maker.
A second process can share the gantry. Up to two processes are supported, and plasma bevel units, the Bevel-R and Bevel-S, are on the option list, so plate too thick for the laser can still be finished on the same table. Positioning speed is up to 140 m/min (5,512 ipm) on the combined X/Y axis, far beyond a plasma gantry.
Because any laser requires an enclosure, the footprint is much longer than the plate. For a 10 ft plate the overall machine length with shuttle table is 46.25 ft (14.1 m), and for a 50 ft plate 134.42 ft (41.0 m). Enclosure height is 11.79 ft (3.6 m) and loading height 3 ft (0.9 m). The Slagger self-cleaning table is standard, and the optional LNC unit cleans, changes and tests nozzles automatically.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Laser bevel cutting to +/- 50° with the Bevel-U unit, for I, V, Y, X and K edge shapes
- Laser power up to 20 kW and sheet thickness up to 2 in (50 mm)
- Working length up to 50 ft (15.2 m), on widths of 6 ft, 8 ft and 10 ft
- Positioning speed up to 140 m/min (5,512 ipm)
- Slagger self-cleaning table is standard, and a shuttle table handles material changes
Limitations
- Overall machine length is 46.25 ft (14.1 m) for a 10 ft plate, because of the shuttle table and enclosure
- Working width stops at 10 ft
- Bevel angle actually reached depends on material type, thickness and bevel type
- Automatic nozzle changing (LNC), gas mixing and plate alignment are options

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The Bevel-U laser bevel unit works to +/- 50°, adjusting the angle continuously during the cut. I, V, Y, X and K edge shapes are possible. Messer notes that the actual cutting angles depend on the material type, thickness and bevel type.
02
Working width is 6 ft, 8 ft or 10 ft and working length is up to 50 ft (15.2 m). Sheet thickness up to 2 in (50 mm) is possible. The machine cuts mild steel, stainless steel and aluminum.
03
Much more than the plate. With the shuttle table the overall machine length is 46.25 ft (14.1 m) for a 10 ft plate, 68.29 ft (20.8 m) for a 20 ft plate and 134.42 ft (41.0 m) for a 50 ft plate. Enclosure height is 11.79 ft (3.6 m).
04
Yes. Up to two processes are supported, and three-process machines are possible depending on the configuration. Plasma bevel cutting units, the Bevel-R and Bevel-S, are optional, as are plasma, inkjet and PinStamp marking systems.
05
The Global Connect, a Windows based control on a stand-alone console that tilts and swivels. An automatic sheet position detection system approaches the sheet edge at three points without contact and rotates the CNC program to match the plate.
