Overview

The Matsuura H.Plus-504 is a high-performance 500mm-class horizontal machining center and the 4th-generation evolution of Matsuura's 500 mm pallet HMC platform. The 04 designation signifies updated design improvements over the base H.Plus-500, including enhanced thermal stability, improved chip evacuation, and refined control software. The machine addresses the same core market as the H.Plus-500 but with incremental improvements to productivity and accuracy that matter in high-volume production environments.

Axis travel measures 730 x 730 x 680 mm (28.7 x 28.7 x 26.8 in) on X/Y/Z, identical to the H.Plus-500. The 500 x 500 mm (19.7 x 19.7 in) pallet supports up to 500 kg (1,102 lb) of workpiece and fixture weight. The standard BT40 spindle delivers 12,000 RPM with 22 kW (30 hp), with optional 15,000 RPM high-speed and HSK-A63 configurations. Rapid traverse is 50 m/min on all axes. The direct-drive B-axis rotary table provides 360-degree indexing in 0.001-degree increments for precise multi-sided access.

The H.Plus-504 retains the box-way construction that defines the H.Plus series, delivering excellent rigidity and vibration damping for heavy cuts in cast iron and steel. Matsuura's enhanced Thermal Displacement Control system uses multiple thermal sensors to compensate for spindle and structural temperature changes in real-time, maintaining positioning accuracy during long production runs. The standard 40-tool magazine is expandable to 60, 90, or 120 positions.

The 504 runs on the latest version of Matsuura's G-Tech 31i control with an updated touchscreen interface, improved diagnostics, and enhanced network connectivity for Industry 4.0 integration. Standard 2-pallet APC expands to multi-pallet LPP configuration. The H.Plus-504 competes with the Mazak HCN-5000, Okuma MB-5000HII, and DMG Mori NHX 5000 2nd Generation in the fiercely competitive 500 mm HMC segment.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 4th-generation platform incorporates incremental improvements in thermal stability, chip management, and control software over the base H.Plus-500
  • Enhanced Thermal Displacement Control with additional sensors maintains accuracy during extended production runs across temperature swings
  • Box-way construction on all axes provides exceptional rigidity for heavy interrupted cuts in automotive and industrial castings
  • Direct-drive B-axis with 0.001-degree resolution enables precise angular positioning for complex multi-sided machining
  • Expandable from 2-pallet to multi-pallet LPP cell for scalable automation as production volumes grow
  • Updated G-Tech 31i control with improved diagnostics and Industry 4.0 connectivity supports modern smart-factory integration

Limitations

  • BT40 spindle class limits aggressive roughing compared to BT50 competitors in the 500 mm pallet segment
  • Price premium over the base H.Plus-500 may not be justified for shops that do not need the enhanced thermal control and connectivity features
  • Matsuura's HMC dealer network in North America is thinner than Mazak or Okuma, impacting service response in some regions
  • Standard 40-tool magazine is modest for high-mix production and the expanded magazine options add significant cost

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the H.Plus-500 and H.Plus-504?

The H.Plus-504 is the 4th-generation update of the 500 mm pallet platform. Key improvements include enhanced thermal displacement control with additional sensors, updated G-Tech 31i control software with improved diagnostics, better chip evacuation design, and Industry 4.0 network connectivity. The core work envelope, spindle options, and automation capabilities remain the same.

02 What does a Matsuura H.Plus-504 cost?

New H.Plus-504 pricing typically ranges from $375,000 to $525,000 depending on spindle selection, tool magazine size, and pallet configuration. The 504 commands a modest premium over the base H.Plus-500 for the upgraded thermal control and connectivity features. Multi-pallet LPP configurations push total investment past $700,000.

03 Is the H.Plus-504 compatible with existing H.Plus-500 tooling?

Yes. The H.Plus-504 uses the same BT40 and optional HSK-A63 tooling as the H.Plus-500. Existing tool holders, fixtures, and pallet setups transfer directly. The machine also maintains the same 500 x 500 mm pallet interface, so shops upgrading from an H.Plus-500 can reuse their fixture investment.

04 How does the enhanced thermal control work?

Matsuura's Enhanced Thermal Displacement Control uses multiple temperature sensors embedded in the spindle, column, and base casting to monitor thermal changes in real-time. The control applies compensation algorithms to adjust axis positions, maintaining positioning accuracy even as the machine structure heats up during extended production runs.
