Overview

With a 165 mm (6.5 in) boring spindle and a 1,600 mm (63 in) x 2,000 mm (78 in) table rated for 20,000 kg (44,040 lb), the KRC HBM-16T is the larger of KRC's two table-type horizontal boring mills. It doubles the table load of the HBM-13T, which carries 10,000 kg (22,020 lb).

Travels are 2,500 mm (98 in) in X (table), 2,000 mm (78.7 in) in Y (spindle head) and 1,500 mm (59 in) in Z (column), plus 1,000 mm (39.4 in) of boring spindle travel on W. The HBM-13T offers 2,000 mm (78.7 in), 1,600 mm (63 in) and 1,250 mm (49 in) on the same three linear axes.

The spindle runs to 3,150 rpm with an ISO 50 taper. Power is listed as 51 kW (68 HP) / 68 kW (91 HP) and maximum torque as 4,150 Nm (3,061 ft-lb) / 5,500 Nm (4,057 ft-lb); KRC does not label the two ratings in either pair. A spindle of the same nominal size and speed appears on the floor-type HBM-16F, but that machine lists 10,000 Nm (7,376 ft-lb) / 12,400 Nm (9,146 ft-lb), so the two are not interchangeable for heavy cuts.

Rapids are 16,000 mm/min (630 ipm) on X, Y and Z as standard and 20,000 mm/min (787 ipm) with the increased-rapid option. W is 10,000 mm/min (394 ipm). Choosing between this model and a floor type usually comes down to the part. If it fits on the table and inside the Y travel, a table-type machine keeps the whole job on one rotary setup.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Table of 1,600 mm (63 in) x 2,000 mm (78 in) carrying 20,000 kg (44,040 lb)
  • Travels of 2,500 mm (98 in), 2,000 mm (78.7 in) and 1,500 mm (59 in) on X, Y and Z, with 1,000 mm (39.4 in) on W
  • Maximum torque listed as 4,150 Nm (3,061 ft-lb) / 5,500 Nm (4,057 ft-lb), above the 2,500 Nm (1,844 ft-lb) / 3,100 Nm (2,286 ft-lb) of the HBM-13T
  • Standard rapids of 16,000 mm/min (630 ipm), or 20,000 mm/min (787 ipm) as an option
  • Series construction with hydrostatic guideways and a hydraulic column counterbalance

Limitations

  • Spindle speed of 3,150 rpm is lower than the 4,000 rpm of the HBM-13T
  • Torque is far below the floor-type HBM-16F, which lists 10,000 Nm (7,376 ft-lb) / 12,400 Nm (9,146 ft-lb)
  • X travel is fixed at 2,500 mm (98 in); unlike the floor types it is not extended in sections
  • Standard rapids are slower than the 20,000 mm/min (787 ipm) of the HBM-13T unless the increased-rapid option is ordered

Best For

Prismatic parts up to 20,000 kg (44,040 lb) machined on four sides Workpieces that fit a 1,600 mm (63 in) x 2,000 mm (78 in) table and 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of Y Mixed boring and milling at up to 3,150 rpm Bores reached with 1,000 mm (39.4 in) of spindle travel plus 1,500 mm (59 in) of column travel

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the table capacity of the KRC HBM-16T?

The table is 1,600 mm (63 in) x 2,000 mm (78 in) and is rated for 20,000 kg (44,040 lb). KRC prints the same size and load under both its table rows and its rotary table rows for this model.

02 What travels does the HBM-16T have?

Table travel (X) is 2,500 mm (98 in), spindle head travel (Y) is 2,000 mm (78.7 in) and column travel (Z) is 1,500 mm (59 in). The boring spindle (W) travels a further 1,000 mm (39.4 in). X, Y and Z rapid at 16,000 mm/min (630 ipm), or 20,000 mm/min (787 ipm) with the increased rate, and W at 10,000 mm/min (394 ipm).

03 Should I choose the HBM-16T or the floor-type HBM-16F?

The HBM-16F is a travelling-column machine with X from 3,000 mm (118 in) upward, Y from 2,000 mm (78.7 in) to 4,000 mm (157.5 in) and much higher torque. The HBM-16T moves the part on its table through 2,500 mm (98 in) of X. If the workpiece fits the table and its 20,000 kg (44,040 lb) limit, the table type is the more compact choice.

04 What spindle is fitted to the HBM-16T?

A 165 mm (6.5 in) boring spindle with an ISO 50 taper and a maximum speed of 3,150 rpm. Listed power is 51 kW (68 HP) / 68 kW (91 HP) and maximum torque 4,150 Nm (3,061 ft-lb) / 5,500 Nm (4,057 ft-lb). The series headstock uses a modular 3 step gearbox.
