How much does the JTEKT FH5500SX-i cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the JTEKT FH5500SX-i that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The JTEKT FH5500SX-i is the high-torque model of the FH5000 Series, a CAT50 horizontal machining center whose spindle is listed at 390 ft-lb (530 Nm) and 15,000 RPM. It works on a 21.65 x 21.65 in (550 x 550 mm) pallet with travels of 35.4 in (900 mm) in X, 31.50 in (800 mm) in Y and 34.6 in (880 mm) in Z.
Everything except the spindle matches the FH5500S-i, which is listed at 223 ft-lb (303 Nm). JTEKT's spindle notes describe the SX-i unit as 60HP peak on a 120mm ID bearing set, where the S spindle is 50HP peak on an 85mm ID set. The larger bearings and the higher torque are what make the CAT50 taper useful for its usual jobs: face mills of real diameter, large drills and taps, roughing in steel and ductile iron.
Speed is not given up for it. The table still shows 15,000 RPM, so one machine can rough a casting and then finish it with small tools without a second setup. Whether full torque is available low in the range is not stated on the page; ask for the power and torque curve if the work is mostly below a few hundred RPM.
The part envelope is 35.4 in (900 mm) of swing by 43.3 in (1,100 mm) of height. Heavy cutting and a 2,200 lb (1,000 kg) pallet load pull in different directions, though. A stiff fixture for hard roughing is heavy, and it comes out of the same allowance as the parts. Tool storage is 60, 120, 240 or 330, and rapids are 2,362 ipm (60 m/min).

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 390 ft-lb (530 Nm) of spindle torque on a CAT50 taper, the highest figure in the FH5000 Series tables
- Keeps 15,000 RPM, so roughing and small-tool finishing run on one spindle
- JTEKT's spindle notes give 60HP peak and a 120mm ID bearing set
- Same 35.4 in (900 mm) X travel and 43.3 in (1,100 mm) workpiece height as the FH5500S-i
- Replaceable spindle taper design, as listed for the high torque spindle
Limitations
- Pallet load is 2,200 lb (1,000 kg), the same as the lighter-spindle models, which limits fixture mass for heavy roughing
- Only one spindle speed, 15,000 RPM, is listed; there is no 20,000 RPM option as on the FH5000S-i
- The page does not say at what speed the 390 ft-lb (530 Nm) is reached
- Pallet is 21.65 x 21.65 in (550 x 550 mm); larger CAT50 work belongs on the FH800SX-i with its 31.50 x 31.50 in (800 x 800 mm) pallet

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The tables list 390 ft-lb (530 Nm) for the FH5500SX-i and 223 ft-lb (303 Nm) for the FH5500S-i. Both spindles are CAT50 and both are listed at 15,000 RPM. JTEKT's notes add that the SX-i spindle is 60HP peak with a 120mm ID bearing set.
02
No. The FH5500SX-i table gives a spindle speed of 15,000 RPM, the same as the FH5500S-i. What the page leaves out is the torque curve, so the speed at which the 390 ft-lb (530 Nm) figure applies has to come from JTEKT.
03
X is 35.4 in (900 mm), Y is 31.50 in (800 mm) and Z is 34.6 in (880 mm). The maximum workpiece swing is 35.4 in (900 mm), maximum workpiece height is 43.3 in (1,100 mm) and the pallet takes up to 2,200 lb (1,000 kg).
04
The table lists tool storage of 60, 120, 240 and 330. JTEKT describes the magazine expansions, up to 330 tools, as optional. Maximum tool diameter, length and weight are not on the product page, which matters on a machine meant for large CAT50 cutters, so get those limits in writing.
