Price estimate
We do not have a price for the JTEKT FH1600SW-i that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The JTEKT FH1600SW-i is the largest horizontal machining center in JTEKT's FH range: a quill-spindle machine with a 49.21 x 62.99 in (1,250 x 1,600 mm) pallet that carries 17,600 lb (8,000 kg). It accepts workpieces up to 125.9 in (3,200 mm) in swing and 86.6 in (2,200 mm) in height.
Numbers that size put it closer to a horizontal boring mill with a pallet changer than to a production HMC. X travel is 118.11 in (3,000 mm), Y is 74.80 in (1,900 mm) and Z is 82.68 in (2,100 mm). The fourth linear axis is the quill. It is 5.9 in (150 mm) in diameter and extends 29.5 in (750 mm) on the W axis, driven by a dual ballscrew system.
The spindle is slow and strong. It is listed at 4,000 RPM on a CAT50 taper with 1,560 ft-lb (2,115 Nm) of torque, and JTEKT quotes 20 kN of thrust. Those figures describe large-diameter drilling, boring and face milling in steel and iron. Aluminium work that depends on spindle speed is better matched to the FH12500SX-i, which is listed at 8,000 and 15,000 RPM. Among the listed spindle features are an oil chiller, a Big Plus spindle taper, a spindle RPM meter and an automatic air blow spindle nose cleaner.
The axes are not equally quick. X rapids at 1,378 ipm (35 m/min), Y and Z at 1,575 ipm (40 m/min). Tool storage starts at 120 and goes to 240 or 330; the smaller magazine offered on other FH models is absent from this table, which fits a machine whose parts each need many large tools. A foundation and crane plan are the first things to settle for a machine of this class, and the product page gives neither machine weight nor floor space.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Workpieces up to 125.9 in (3,200 mm) in swing and 86.6 in (2,200 mm) in height
- 17,600 lb (8,000 kg) pallet load on a 49.21 x 62.99 in (1,250 x 1,600 mm) pallet
- 5.9 in (150 mm) quill with 29.5 in (750 mm) of W-axis travel on a dual ballscrew drive
- 1,560 ft-lb (2,115 Nm) of spindle torque and 20 kN of thrust
- 118.11 in (3,000 mm) of X travel
- Spindle oil chiller and Big Plus spindle taper are among the listed key features
Limitations
- Spindle speed is 4,000 RPM, with no faster spindle in the table
- X-axis rapid is 1,378 ipm (35 m/min), slower than the 1,575 ipm (40 m/min) of Y and Z
- Smallest tool magazine listed is 120
- Machine weight, floor space and power supply are not on the product page
- Torque, at 1,560 ft-lb (2,115 Nm), is slightly below the 1,622 ft-lb (2,200 Nm) listed for the smaller FH12500 Gear/Quill

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The table gives a maximum workpiece swing of 125.9 in (3,200 mm), a maximum workpiece height of 86.6 in (2,200 mm) and a maximum load on the pallet of 17,600 lb (8,000 kg). The pallet is 49.21 x 62.99 in (1,250 x 1,600 mm). JTEKT's introduction to the page quotes a slightly lower workpiece height than the table does, so confirm the height limit for a part near it.
02
The quill spindle. The 5.9 in (150 mm) diameter quill travels 29.5 in (750 mm) out of the spindle head. JTEKT lists a dual ballscrew W-axis drive system among the key features. With 82.68 in (2,100 mm) of Z travel on the table as well, the machine has two ways to feed a tool into a deep bore.
03
A 4,000 RPM CAT50 quill spindle listed at 1,560 ft-lb (2,115 Nm) of torque. JTEKT also states 20 kN of thrust. The listed features include a spindle oil chiller, a Big Plus spindle taper, a spindle RPM meter and an automatic air blow spindle nose cleaner. Spindle power is not in the table.
04
Both are quill machines. The FH12500 Gear/Quill has a 5.10 in (130 mm) quill with 22.00 in (560 mm) of travel, an 11,000 lb (5,000 kg) pallet load and a 6,000 RPM spindle. The FH1600SW-i has the larger 5.9 in (150 mm) quill with 29.5 in (750 mm) of travel and carries 17,600 lb (8,000 kg), at 4,000 RPM.

120, 240 or 330, according to the table. The smaller magazine listed for other FH horizontals does not appear for this model. Tool diameter, length and weight limits are not published on the page.
