Overview
The Mazak HCN-8800 is the large-format flagship of Mazak's HCN horizontal machining center series, built around an 800 mm (31.5 in) pallet for production machining of the largest prismatic workpieces in the energy, heavy equipment, and aerospace segments. It is the choice when the HCN-6800's 630 mm pallet, 1,000 mm travel, or 1,000 kg load capacity is insufficient for the application at hand.
The HCN-8800 provides axis travels of 1,250 x 1,250 x 1,250 mm (49.2 x 49.2 x 49.2 in) with a working diameter of 1,250 mm and maximum workpiece height of 1,500 mm (59.1 in). Table load capacity is 2,500 kg (5,512 lb), covering the heaviest production castings and weldments encountered in large-scale industrial manufacturing. The standard twin-pallet APC is integrated into the machine base, providing continuous production capability as standard.
The spindle system is anchored to heavy-duty machining requirements: a 37 kW (50 hp) unit through HSK-A100 interface at 6,000 RPM standard, delivering extremely high torque for roughing large steel and cast iron parts. Optional spindle configurations reach 10,000 RPM for alloy and stainless work. The B-axis indexes in 1-degree increments standard, with CNC B-axis as an option. The standard ATC holds 60 tools with options up to 300 tools for extensive part families.
The HCN-8800 runs on MAZATROL SmoothAi and competes with the Okuma MA-800HII, the Toyoda FH-1000, and the Makino a100 in the 800 mm large-part horizontal segment. New machine pricing runs $1,200,000 to $2,000,000+ depending on configuration, pallet pool size, and automation integration.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 2,500 kg table load capacity handles the heaviest production castings and weldments in the energy, mining, and heavy machinery sectors that smaller HMCs cannot accommodate
- 37 kW spindle with 1,200 Nm torque enables aggressive roughing in cast iron, ductile iron, and steel at production material removal rates without spindle stress
- 1,250 mm cube travel provides four-face access on the largest industrial prismatic workpieces -- gearbox housings, pump bodies, and marine engine cases -- in a single setup
- HSK-A100 interface delivers high rigidity tool retention for the heavy interrupted cuts common on large castings
Limitations
- 6,000 RPM standard spindle speed is very conservative for aluminum and non-ferrous applications; the machine is optimized for heavy ferrous materials, not light-alloy aerospace work
- 42,000 kg machine weight and large footprint require purpose-designed foundations and facilities planning well in advance of delivery
- $1,200,000-$2,000,000+ price point restricts the HCN-8800 to large-volume production shops or contract manufacturers with consistent large-part work to amortize the investment

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The HCN-8800 accommodates workpieces up to 1,250 mm in diameter and 1,500 mm in height on the 800 mm pallet, with a maximum load of 2,500 kg. In practical terms, this covers the vast majority of large industrial castings encountered in energy, heavy machinery, and marine manufacturing. Parts requiring larger envelopes typically move to specialized boring mills or floor-type machining centers.
02
The 800 mm pallet step up from 630 mm provides approximately 60% more pallet area, higher load capacity (2,500 kg vs 1,000 kg on the HCN-6800), and 1,250 mm axis travels versus 900 mm. The HCN-8800 is appropriate when parts cannot fit within the HCN-6800 envelope or exceed its 1,000 kg load limit. The tradeoff is significantly higher machine cost, larger footprint, and more demanding foundation requirements.
03
Yes. Like all Mazak HCN machines, the HCN-8800 interfaces with the PALLETECH pallet management system. At the 800 mm pallet size, PALLETECH FMS cells are commonly built with 4-8 pallets rather than the larger pools typical at 400-630 mm size, reflecting the higher cost and longer cycle times of large-part machining.
04
At 42,000 kg, the HCN-8800 always requires an engineered foundation. Mazak provides a foundation drawing specific to the machine configuration. Most installations require a dedicated reinforced concrete pad, typically 300-400 mm thick, designed for the specific load distribution. Foundation preparation should begin 6-9 months before the machine arrives.
05
The primary buyers are energy companies and their subcontractors (oil and gas, power generation), heavy equipment manufacturers (mining, construction), marine engine manufacturers, large aerospace structure shops, and defense contractors. These customers share a common need: large workpieces with multiple machined faces, high material removal requirements, and production volumes that justify dedicated HMC investment.
