Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the JTEKT FH12500 Gear/Quill that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from JTEKT or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

The JTEKT FH12500 Gear/Quill is the heavy-boring version of JTEKT's 1,250 mm horizontal: a CAT50 machine with a geared spindle listed at 1,622 ft-lb (2,200 Nm) and a quill, the W axis, that extends 22.00 in (560 mm). The quill is 5.10 in (130 mm) in diameter. Spindle speed is listed as 6,000 RPM, or 4,000 RPM for the quill.

A quill changes what a horizontal can bore. Instead of hanging a long bar out of the taper, the spindle itself advances into the part, so the tool stays short and stiff at the bottom of a deep bore. Add the 72.8 in (1,850 mm) of table travel in Z and bores far inside a large casting come within reach from one side.

The frame is shared with the FH12500SX-i. Both have a 49.21 x 49.21 in (1,250 x 1,250 mm) pallet rated for 11,000 lb (5,000 kg), 94.4 in (2,400 mm) of X travel and a 94.5 in (2,400 mm) workpiece swing. The Gear/Quill head gives up some vertical reach: Y travel is 63.00 in (1,600 mm), while maximum workpiece height stays at 70.8 in (1,800 mm). Check where the features sit on a tall part, because the head has less Y stroke than the part may have height.

Guides are cylindrical roller type, the Y and Z axes use dual ballscrew drive, and the base is Meehanite cast iron. Rapid feedrate is 1,654 ipm (42 m/min) on X, Y and Z. Tool storage is 60, 120, 240 or 330. JTEKT's page for this model repeats the spindle text of the FH12500SX-i, whose table lists 8,000 and 15,000 RPM; the specification table here lists neither speed, and this page follows the table.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,622 ft-lb (2,200 Nm) of spindle torque, the highest listed among JTEKT's 1,250 mm pallet horizontals
  • Quill spindle with 22.00 in (560 mm) of W-axis travel and a 5.10 in (130 mm) quill diameter
  • 11,000 lb (5,000 kg) pallet load and a 94.5 in (2,400 mm) workpiece swing
  • 72.8 in (1,850 mm) of Z travel in addition to the quill stroke
  • Tool storage of 60, 120, 240 or 330

Limitations

  • Top speed is 6,000 RPM, and 4,000 RPM on the quill, which rules out high-speed small-tool work
  • Y travel is 63.00 in (1,600 mm), shorter than the 70.8 in (1,800 mm) maximum workpiece height
  • The FH12500SX-i offers 70.8 in (1,800 mm) of Y and speeds of 8,000 and 15,000 RPM on the same frame
  • Spindle power is not listed in the table

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does the quill add on the FH12500 Gear/Quill?

A W axis. The 5.10 in (130 mm) diameter quill extends up to 22.00 in (560 mm) out of the head, carrying the tool toward the work while the head and column stay put. That keeps boring bars short. The table lists 4,000 RPM for the quill against 6,000 RPM for the spindle.

02 How much torque does the spindle produce?

The table lists 1,622 ft-lb (2,200 Nm) on a CAT50 taper. For comparison, the FH12500SX-i on the same frame is listed at 887 ft-lb (1,202 Nm). Spindle power and the speed at which the torque applies are not given on the page.

03 What are the axis travels?

X is 94.4 in (2,400 mm), Y is 63.00 in (1,600 mm), Z is 72.8 in (1,850 mm) and W, the quill, is 22.00 in (560 mm). The rapid feedrate is 1,654 ipm (42 m/min) on X, Y and Z. No rapid rate is listed for the W axis.

04 What size and weight of part can it take?

Up to 94.5 in (2,400 mm) of swing and 70.8 in (1,800 mm) of height on a 49.21 x 49.21 in (1,250 x 1,250 mm) pallet, with 11,000 lb (5,000 kg) as the maximum load. Y travel is 63.00 in (1,600 mm), so the spindle does not cover the full height of the tallest part in one position.

05 Is there a larger quill machine in the range?

Yes. The FH1600SW-i has a 5.9 in (150 mm) quill with 29.5 in (750 mm) of W travel, a 49.21 x 62.99 in (1,250 x 1,600 mm) pallet and a 17,600 lb (8,000 kg) pallet load. The FH1600SW-i spindle is listed at 4,000 RPM and 1,560 ft-lb (2,115 Nm), so the larger machine does not bring more torque.
