Overview

The Hwacheon Hi-TECH 850 is the largest of the Hi-TECH turning centers, with a Ø1,050 mm (Ø41.3 in) swing and a 24 in chuck on an A2-15 spindle. Its turning envelope comes with two diameters. Work up to Ø920 mm (Ø36.2 in) can be turned over a length of 385 mm (15.2 in), which covers flanges, discs and short hubs; along the full bed the limit is Ø825 mm (Ø32.5 in), over 2,500 mm (98.4 in) on the standard bed, 3,500 mm (137.8 in) on the L and 5,100 mm (200.8 in) on the XL.

The spindle has a Ø185 mm (Ø7.3 in) bore for Ø164 mm (Ø6.5 in) bar and a 45 / 37 kW (60.3 / 49.6 hp) motor. The table gives 1,500 rpm as the maximum and 1,400 rpm with a 24 in chuck, although 24 in is also the standard chuck size, so confirm which figure applies to the machine as delivered. With the optional 32 in chuck the limit is 1,200 rpm.

This is a slow-moving, long-reach machine. Rapids are 10 m/min (394 ipm) in X and 12 m/min (472 ipm) in Z, dropping to 9 m/min (354 ipm) in Z on the XL bed. X travel is 485 mm (19.1 in), but only 430 mm (16.9 in) on the XL. The tailstock travels up to 4,800 mm (189.0 in) on the XL bed, on a Ø160 mm (Ø6.3 in) cylinder with an MT #6 quill. The turret has 12 stations indexing at 0.3 sec/step and takes Ø80 mm boring bars.

The YMC version has 220 mm (8.7 in) of Y travel, with 11 / 7.5 kW (14.8 / 10.1 hp) driven tools at 2,500 rpm. Weight ranges from 22,000 to 23,500 kg (48,501 to 51,808 lb) on the standard bed to 30,000 to 32,000 kg (66,138 to 70,547 lb) on the XL, which is 9,760 mm (384.3 in) long. The supply is 85 kVA.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Ø920 mm (Ø36.2 in) turning diameter for parts up to 385 mm (15.2 in) long, Ø825 mm (Ø32.5 in) along the bed
  • XL bed turns up to 5,100 mm (200.8 in)
  • 220 mm (8.7 in) of Y travel on the YMC version with 11 / 7.5 kW (14.8 / 10.1 hp) driven tools
  • 24 in chuck as standard, 32 in as an option
  • Turret indexes at 0.3 sec/step and takes Ø80 mm boring bars

Limitations

  • Rapids are 10 / 12 m/min (394 / 472 ipm) in X / Z, and 9 m/min (354 ipm) in Z on the XL
  • X travel shrinks from 485 mm (19.1 in) to 430 mm (16.9 in) on the XL bed
  • Spindle speed falls to 1,200 rpm with the 32 in chuck
  • Bar capacity is Ø164 mm (Ø6.5 in); larger tube needs the Hi-TECH 850BB/BB+
  • XL weighs 30,000 to 32,000 kg (66,138 to 70,547 lb), so foundations need planning

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Why does the Hi-TECH 850 list two maximum turning diameters?

Ø920 mm (Ø36.2 in) is available only for turning lengths up to 385 mm (15.2 in). Along the full turning length, 2,500 mm (98.4 in) on the standard bed up to 5,100 mm (200.8 in) on the XL, the limit is Ø825 mm (Ø32.5 in). Check both figures against a long part with a large flange.

02 How does the Hi-TECH 850 differ from the Hi-TECH 850BB/BB+?

Travels, rapids and turning diameter are shared. The Hi-TECH 850 has a 24 in chuck on an A2-15 nose, a Ø185 mm (Ø7.3 in) bore and 1,500 rpm. The Hi-TECH 850BB/BB+ uses an A2-20 nose with a Ø300 mm (Ø11.8 in) bore on the BB or Ø375 mm (Ø14.8 in) on the BB+, at 1,000 or 750 rpm.

03 What bed lengths are offered?

Standard, L and XL. Z travel is 2,650 mm (104.3 in), 3,650 mm (143.7 in) and 5,250 mm (206.7 in); tailstock travel 2,500 mm (98.4 in), 3,500 mm (137.8 in) and 4,800 mm (189.0 in). The coolant tank grows from 400 L (106 US gal) to 550 L (145 US gal) and 700 L (185 US gal).

04 What does the YMC version add?

A Y axis with 220 mm (8.7 in) of travel and a 10 m/min (394 ipm) rapid, plus driven tools with an 11 / 7.5 kW (14.8 / 10.1 hp) motor at up to 2,500 rpm, taking end mills up to Ø32 mm and ER 50 collets. The YMC machine is 3,180 mm wide against 3,030 mm (119.3 in) for the turning version.

05 How heavy is it?

22,000 to 23,500 kg (48,501 to 51,808 lb) on the standard bed, 25,600 to 27,100 kg (56,438 to 59,745 lb) on the L and 30,000 to 32,000 kg (66,138 to 70,547 lb) on the XL. The standard machine is 6,860 x 3,030 x 3,020 mm (270.1 x 119.3 x 118.9 in).
