Overview

The Hwacheon VT-450 is a compact vertical turning center: a 12 in chuck, Ø460 mm (Ø18.1 in) maximum turning diameter and 460 mm (18.1 in) maximum turning length, with a 2,500 rpm spindle. It is sold in four forms, the VT-450 in right- or left-hand build (R, L), the same with driven tools (MC), and the twin-spindle VT-450 / 2SP with or without MC.

The footprint is the reason to look at it. A single machine stands on 1,806 x 2,197 mm (71.1 x 86.5 in) and is 2,548 mm (100.3 in) high, weighing 7,500 kgf (16,535 lb). The 2SP version joins two stations on 3,962 x 2,197 mm (156.0 x 86.5 in) with a 2-path control and 12 + 12 in chucks, which suits OP10/OP20 work on one base. Supply is 40 kVA for the single machine and 75 kVA for the 2SP.

The spindle has an A2-8 nose, a Ø130 mm (Ø5.1 in) front bearing and 22 / 18.5 kW (29.5 / 24.8 hp). The turret holds 8 tools, or 10 on the MC, takes □25 mm shanks and Ø50 mm boring bars, and indexes in 0.15 s/step. X and Z travel are 260 mm (10.2 in) and 480 mm (18.9 in), with rapids of 24 / 20 m/min (945 / 787 ipm).

On the MC version the driven tools are rated 3.7 / 2.2 kW (5.0 / 3.0 hp) and 3,000 rpm, enough for Ø16 mm drilling and M12 tapping, with C-axis indexing in 0.0001° steps. The MC trims the envelope to Ø445 mm (Ø17.5 in) and 394 mm (15.5 in), so check the part against the version being quoted. Next size up, the VT-650 turns Ø800 mm (Ø31.5 in) on an 18 in chuck but tops out at 1,500 rpm as standard, so the VT-450 is the faster of the two for parts that fit it.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 2,500 rpm spindle with 22 / 18.5 kW (29.5 / 24.8 hp) on an A2-8 nose
  • Turret indexes in 0.15 s/step
  • Single machine fits on 1,806 x 2,197 mm (71.1 x 86.5 in)
  • Twin-spindle 2SP version with 12 + 12 in chucks and a 2-path control
  • MC version adds 3,000 rpm driven tools and 0.0001° C-axis indexing

Limitations

  • Only 8 turret stations on the standard machine (10 on the MC)
  • Driven tools on the MC are rated 3.7 / 2.2 kW (5.0 / 3.0 hp), enough for Ø16 mm drilling and M12 tapping but not heavy milling
  • The MC version reduces turning diameter to Ø445 mm (Ø17.5 in) and length to 394 mm (15.5 in)
  • None of the four VT-450 variants has a Y axis, which the larger VT-650 offers in its YMC form
06

Best For

Chucked parts up to Ø460 mm (Ø18.1 in) and 460 mm (18.1 in) long Two-operation work on the twin-spindle 2SP version Shops short of floor space Parts with light cross drilling on the MC version

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What versions of the VT-450 are there?

Four: the VT-450 in right- or left-hand build (R, L), the VT-450 / MC with driven tools, the twin-spindle VT-450 / 2SP, and the VT-450 / 2SP / MC. The 2SP versions use 12 + 12 in chucks, 8 + 8 or 10 + 10 turret stations and a 2-path control.

02 How large a part can the VT-450 turn?

Up to Ø460 mm (Ø18.1 in) and 460 mm (18.1 in) long on the standard machine, or Ø445 mm (Ø17.5 in) and 394 mm (15.5 in) on the MC. Swing over the bed is Ø610 mm (Ø24.0 in) and the standard turning diameter is Ø305 mm (Ø12.0 in), or Ø248.2 mm (Ø9.8 in) on the MC.

03 What can the driven tools on the VT-450 / MC do?

They are rated 3.7 / 2.2 kW (5.0 / 3.0 hp) and 3,000 rpm, with Ø16 mm drilling and M12 tapping capacity. C-axis indexing is 0.0001°. That covers bolt circles and cross holes; heavier milling needs a larger machine.

04 How much do the VT-450 versions weigh and what power do they need?

7,500 kgf (16,535 lb) for the standard machine and 7,550 kgf (16,645 lb) for the MC. The 2SP weighs 15,400 kgf (33,951 lb) and the 2SP / MC 15,500 kgf (34,171 lb). Supply is 40 kVA, or 75 kVA for the 2SP. The coolant tank holds 150 L, or 150 + 150 L on the 2SP.

05 How does the VT-450 compare with the VT-650?

The VT-650 turns up to Ø800 mm (Ø31.5 in) and 750 mm (29.5 in) on an 18 in chuck with an A2-11 nose, and runs 1,500 rpm as standard. The VT-450 is smaller, Ø460 mm (Ø18.1 in) and 460 mm (18.1 in), but reaches 2,500 rpm. Both use 22 / 18.5 kW (29.5 / 24.8 hp) spindles.
