Overview

The Johnford ST-80CX gives the A2-15 spindle a metre of clearance over the cross slide. It swings 1,200 mm (47.2 in) over the bed and 1,000 mm (39.4 in) over the carriage, with 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of Z travel and 520 mm (20.5 in) of X.

Its turn-mill relative shows what the frame can carry. The ST-80CX+B+C+Y uses the same Ø1,200 mm swing and 2,000 mm between centers with a Ø610 mm (24 in) chuck, and is listed at 45,000 kg (99,206 lb) with its B-axis spindle and 80-tool magazine. The turret lathe here weighs 15,500 kg (34,100 lb).

As a lathe, the ST-80CX is aimed at large castings and forgings that are short for their diameter: valve and pump bodies, bearing housings, large hubs. The 510 mm (20.1 in) chuck, or the optional 610 mm (24 in) one, holds them, and 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) through four automatic speeds cuts them. A 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp) motor and a geared headstock at 1,200 rpm are the heavier alternatives.

Standard speed is 1,500 rpm. The tailstock travels 1,700 mm (66.9 in) with an MT#7 quill of Ø200 mm (7.9 in). Dimensions are 7,412 x 2,715 x 3,200 mm (291.8 x 106.9 x 126 in).
