Overview

Three metres of travel with a 2,000 rpm spindle: the Johnford ST-130B has 3,050 mm (120.1 in) on Z and is markedly heavier than the shorter models, at 20,100 kg (44,220 lb).

A shaft three metres long and small enough for a 381 mm (15 in) chuck is slender by any measure. Running it near 2,000 rpm between a chuck and a center invites whip and chatter, so this is a size at which the optional steady rests stop being a convenience. The accessory list offers manual or hydraulic self-centering types. The standard support is the tailstock: Ø200 mm (7.9 in) quill, MT#7, with 2,750 mm (108.3 in) of body travel.

The weight tells its own story. The ST-100B, the next size down, is listed at 16,500 kg (36,300 lb), so the three-metre bed is a distinctly heavier structure and not just a stretched one.

Spindle and carriage are unchanged from the shorter B models: A2-11 nose, 132.5 mm (5.2 in) bore, 116 mm (4.6 in) bar capacity, four automatic speeds, 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) with 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) optional, 370 mm (14.6 in) of X travel and 7 kW axis motors. Length is 8,612 mm (339.1 in).

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Does the ST-130B need a steady rest?

For slender parts near its 3,050 mm (120.1 in) capacity it normally will. The machine comes with a programmable hydraulic tailstock; manual or hydraulic self-centering steady rests are listed as optional accessories.

02 Why is the ST-130B so much heavier than the ST-100B?

The table gives 20,100 kg (44,220 lb) for the ST-130B and 16,500 kg (36,300 lb) for the ST-100B without comment. Z travel goes from 2,400 mm (94.5 in) on the ST-100B to 3,050 mm (120.1 in).

03 What is the spindle speed of the ST-130B?

2,000 rpm, with four automatic speeds. The motor is 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) as standard and 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) as an option.

04 What are the outside dimensions of the ST-130B?

8,612 x 2,504 x 2,895 mm (339.1 x 98.6 x 114 in). The bed is inclined at 60° and swing over the bed is 920 mm (36.2 in).
