Overview
With 13,000 mm (511.8 in) of column travel and an 8,000 mm (315 in) floor plate, the Johnford FBMC-X13 is the second length of the floor-type FBMC boring machining centers.
How the X travel is shared out is the practical question on any floor-type machine. Here the floor plate is 8,000 x 2,500 mm (315 x 98.4 in), and a rotary table of 2,500 x 3,000 mm (98.4 x 118.1 in) takes up further length. The column therefore serves two stations. An operator can set up a long weldment on the plate while a casting is being indexed and bored on the rotary table, and the machine walks from one to the other at an X rapid of 16 m/min.
The rotary table is a 0.001° B axis with precision locating holes at every 90°, an absolute encoder and a hydrostatic system. Hydrostatic support matters at this scale: the table and the plate are both rated 5,000 kg/m², and turning tens of tonnes on rolling elements would wear them quickly.
Vertically the headstock covers 3,500~5,000 mm (137.8~196.9 in), a range that depends on the column ordered. An operator's platform that moves up and down is a standard accessory, since the spindle may be working several metres above the floor.
