Overview

The Huron DX 135 nvu is the smallest lathe in Huron's turning range and the fastest: a 6,000 rpm spindle on an A2-4 nose, for parts up to 220 mm (8.7 in) in diameter and 240 mm long. Bar capacity is 30 mm.

High spindle speed and small bar size go together. A 20 mm bar needs several thousand rpm to reach a sensible cutting speed in steel, and far more in brass or aluminium, so a 50-6,000 rpm range suits small precision turned parts. Motor power is 4.8/3.7 kW with Siemens and 5.5/3.7 kW with Fanuc, in proportion to the work.

The nvu machines are the restyled generation of the DX line. Huron's list for them adds a rear-side chip disposal and an operator panel that tilts through 90°, and notes that an electro-spindle is available. The 30° slant saddle, linear guideways and bi-directional servo turret with a 0.5 sec change time are carried over.

Travels are 120 mm in X and 240 mm in Z at 24 m/min. The turret has 8 stations with a tool size listed as 20 x 20, and boring bars may be 32 mm. A tailstock with a 75 mm hydraulic quill, 100 mm of stroke and 300 kgf of thrust is included. The machine weighs 2,400 kg (5,291 lb) and measures 1,920 x 1,500 mm. Positioning is 0.007 mm.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 50-6,000 rpm spindle, the highest speed in the DX range
  • Very compact: 1,920 x 1,500 mm and 2,400 kg (5,291 lb)
  • Operator panel tilting through 90° and rear-side chip disposal
  • Turret change time of 0.5 sec quoted by Huron
  • Tailstock with hydraulic quill on a 240 mm lathe

Limitations

  • Bar capacity is 30 mm through a 39 mm bore

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the capacity of the Huron DX 135 nvu?

Swing over bed is 400 mm, standard turning diameter 170 mm, maximum turning diameter 220 mm and maximum turning length 240 mm. Bar capacity is 30 mm through a 39 mm spindle bore.

02 How fast is the DX 135 nvu spindle?

The speed range is 50-6,000 rpm on an A2-4 spindle nose. Motor power is 4.8/3.7 kW with Siemens and 5.5/3.7 kW with Fanuc. Huron's feature list says an electro-spindle is available.

03 What does nvu add to the DX lathes?

Huron describes the nvu machines as introduced with a new aesthetic look and features. The feature list for them includes rear-side chip disposal and a 90° tilting operator panel, alongside the 30° slant saddle and servo turret of the DX 200 family.

04 How does the DX 135 nvu differ from the DX 170 nvu?

They share the bed, travels and footprint. The DX 170 nvu has a larger spindle with an A2-5 nose, 55 mm bore and 44 mm bar capacity, rated 7.2/5.5 kW on Siemens, but limited to 4,000 rpm. The DX 135 nvu runs to 6,000 rpm with a 30 mm bar capacity.
