Overview
The EMAG VL 1 is the most compact machine in EMAG's vertical turning center lineup, purpose-built for high-volume production of small chucked parts with diameters up to 100 mm. Like all EMAG vertical pick-up lathes, the VL 1 uses an inverted spindle that descends to pick up raw parts directly from a conveyor belt, machines them, and deposits finished parts back onto the outfeed conveyor — eliminating conventional loading systems and keeping floor space to an absolute minimum.
The machine's self-loading concept is fundamental to its productivity: cycle times include only chip-to-chip seconds, not operator intervention. The integrated workpiece conveyor and pick-up spindle enable fully automated operation in standalone or linked-cell configurations. Its rigid polymer concrete (Mineralit) base dampens vibration, extends tool life, and maintains thermal stability across long production runs typical of automotive and precision component manufacturing.
The VL 1 accommodates parts weighing up to 1 kg, making it ideal for valve bodies, small flanges, bearing rings, and similar components where workpiece size suits the platform's working envelope. Turret-mounted live tooling options allow light milling, drilling, and thread-cutting in the same setup, reducing downstream operations. The machine's small footprint — among the smallest in EMAG's portfolio — makes it well suited to cell-based manufacturing floors where space commands a premium.
As part of the EMAG modular system, VL 1 machines can be linked directly to VL 2, VL 4, or grinding machines using standardized conveyor interfaces. This modularity enables complete machining lines where parts move automatically from raw stock to finished state without manual handling, a hallmark of the EMAG manufacturing philosophy.

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The VL 1 uses an inverted spindle that travels vertically to pick up raw parts from an integrated conveyor belt below the machine, clamps them, performs all turning operations, then lowers back down to deposit the finished part on the outfeed conveyor. No external robot or gantry loader is required.
02
The VL 1 is designed for parts up to 100 mm in diameter, 80 mm in turning length, and 1 kg in weight. For larger chucked parts, EMAG offers the VL 2, VL 4, VL 6, and VL 8 models.
03
Yes. The 12-station turret supports live tooling at up to 4,500 rpm, enabling off-center drilling, radial milling, and thread cutting in the same clamping. Complex prismatic features typically require a dedicated machining center.
04
Mineralit is EMAG's proprietary polymer concrete — a cast composite of mineral aggregate and epoxy resin. It absorbs vibration approximately six times more effectively than cast iron, improving surface finish and tool life while offering better thermal stability during extended production runs.
05
Yes. EMAG's modular conveyor interfaces allow VL 1 machines to be linked with each other or with other EMAG platforms (grinding, turning, induction hardening) to create complete machining lines. Parts move automatically between stations without operator handling.
