Overview

A 380 mm (15.0 in) spindle bore is available on the Colchester Magnum HD CNC 1000, the fourth and largest of the bore options on this 1,000 mm (39.4 in) swing heavy-duty CNC lathe. The full list reads 155 / 250 / 305 / 380 mm (6.1 / 9.8 / 12.0 / 15.0 in). Bed lengths run from 2 m to 6 m between centres.

Bores of that size exist for one kind of work: long hollow parts that must pass through the headstock so that only the end is machined. Drill pipe, casing, large hydraulic cylinders and flanged tube are the usual examples. Colchester lists rear chuck options with a manual or auto sliding rear chuck guard, which is how such parts are held at both ends of the spindle.

Speed falls as the bore grows. The four ranges are 6 - 800 / 4 - 600 / 4 - 400 / 4 - 300 rpm, on noses A2-11 / A2-15 / A2-20 / A2-20. Spindle power is 22.5 kW (30.2 hp) with a 30 kW (40.2 hp) option. That is the same motor as the Magnum HD CNC 800, so this model is the larger-capacity machine and no stronger in the cut.

Swing over the cross slide is 710 mm (28.0 in), well beyond what the smaller model allows, and the gap takes 1,300 mm (51.2 in). The structure is the one-piece bed, floor-type casting common to the series, with an alloy steel spindle on opposed taper roller bearings. A 4-way hydraulic tool post, rear swarf conveyor and FANUC 0i-TF Plus control with Manual Guide i are standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What spindle bores does the Magnum HD CNC 1000 offer?

155 / 250 / 305 / 380 mm (6.1 / 9.8 / 12.0 / 15.0 in). The corresponding noses are A2-11 / A2-15 / A2-20 / A2-20 and the speed ranges 6 - 800 / 4 - 600 / 4 - 400 / 4 - 300 rpm.

02 How does it differ from the Magnum HD CNC 800?

The Magnum HD CNC 800 swings 800 mm (31.5 in) over the bed and 510 mm (20.1 in) over the cross slide, and its largest bore is 305 mm (12.0 in). This model swings 1,000 mm (39.4 in) and 710 mm (28.0 in) and adds the 380 mm (15.0 in) bore. Spindle power and bed lengths are the same.

03 How much power does the spindle have?

22.5 kW (30.2 hp) as standard, with 30 kW (40.2 hp) listed as an option. Colchester describes the headstock as a 4-step auto change variable speed unit and the spindle as alloy steel with opposed taper roller bearings. No torque figure is published.

04 What tooling arrangement is standard?

A 4-way hydraulic tool post with tool holders. An auto indexing tool turret is optional, and so is C-axis functionality with a driven tool turret for milling, drilling and tapping. The tailstock is carriage driven with manual quill movement.
