Overview

On the HNK VTC-25/30 a 20,000 kg (44,092 lb) part can be turned, milled and drilled without leaving the table. The machine has a 2,500 mm (98.4 in) table, 3,000 mm (118.1 in) of swing and cutting diameter and 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of turning height.

It is the largest VTC that still mills at about 2,500 rpm. From the VTC-30/40 up, the milling spindle is limited to about 2,000 rpm. The motor here is A.C 18.5/22 kW (24.8/29.5 hp), cont/30min, with an ISO 50 taper. It is also the largest size with a single, stated ram: 240 x 240 mm (9.4 x 9.4 in), with 1,200 mm (47.2 in) of Z travel. Above it the catalogue lists alternatives.

The C-axis slows as tables grow. Here the table speed for indexing is 0 to 1 rpm, half that of the VTC-20/25, with 0.001 degree indexing. For positioning drilled holes that hardly matters. For C-axis contour milling on a large radius it sets the feed available at the cutter, so check it against the job.

Turning speed is about 130 rpm in two steps from an A.C 45/55 kW (60.3/73.8 hp) motor. The rail moves 250 mm (9.8 in) x 4 steps and X travel is -200 to +1,700 mm (-7.9 to +66.9 in). Controls: Fanuc 31i-B, Siemens 840D.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 20,000 kg (44,092 lb) table load on a turn-mill machine
  • Largest VTC with about 2,500 rpm on the milling spindle
  • 1,200 mm (47.2 in) of Z travel and a rail moving 250 mm (9.8 in) x 4 steps
  • 3,000 mm (118.1 in) swing, 2,000 mm (78.7 in) turning height

Limitations

  • C-axis table speed is 0 to 1 rpm
  • Milling motor stays at A.C 18.5/22 kW (24.8/29.5 hp), the VTC-20/25 rating
  • Turning speed tops out at about 130 rpm

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How heavy a part can the VTC-25/30 turn and mill?

The table is rated for 20,000 kg (44,092 lb). Swing and cutting diameter are 3,000 mm (118.1 in) and turning height 2,000 mm (78.7 in), on a table of 2,500 mm (98.4 in).

02 What is the C-axis speed of the VTC-25/30?

0 to 1 rpm for indexing, with 0.001 degree as the indexing increment. The VTC-20/25 lists 0 to 2 rpm and the VTC-30/40 lists 0 to 0.5 rpm, so the figure falls steadily with table size.

03 What ram does the VTC-25/30 have?

A 240 x 240 mm (9.4 x 9.4 in) ram with 1,200 mm (47.2 in) of vertical travel and a 40 x 40 mm (1.6 x 1.6 in) shank for turning tools. The next size, the VTC-30/40, lists rams from 300 x 300 to 400 x 400 mm (11.8 x 11.8 to 15.7 x 15.7 in).

04 Which is faster at milling, the VTC-25/30 or the VTC-30/40?

The VTC-25/30 runs its milling spindle to about 2,500 rpm; the VTC-30/40 stops at about 2,000 rpm but has a larger A.C 22/26 kW (29.5/34.9 hp) motor. Small drills and end mills favour the higher speed.
