Overview

The Haas TL-2P is the production variant of the TL-2 long-bed toolroom lathe, combining 1,219 mm (48 in) of turning length with an automatic 8-station turret and power chuck. Like the TL-1P is to the TL-1, the TL-2P takes the long-bed TL-2 platform and upgrades it for repeat production work on long parts.

The A2-5 spindle delivers 7.5 kW (10 hp) at up to 3,000 RPM standard, with 146 Nm (108 ft-lb) of peak torque at 355 RPM. The 58 mm (2.3 in) spindle bore handles common bar stock sizes. Max turning diameter is 406 mm (16 in) with a 508 mm (20 in) swing over the front apron. The 48-inch turning length is the same as the base TL-2, making this the longest-bed machine in the Haas toolroom lathe series.

The 8-station automatic turret eliminates manual tool changes, and the power chuck enables semi-unattended operation for production batches. The IPS conversational programming system carries over from the base TL-2, letting operators build programs by selecting operations without writing G-code. X-axis travel is 203 mm (8 in) and Z-axis travel is 1,219 mm (48 in) with rapids at 11.4 m/min (450 IPM).

The TL-2P fills a specific niche: shops that need to run repeat production batches on long parts without investing in a full ST-series slant-bed lathe. Long threaded rods, barrel blanks, extended shafts, and tubular components up to 48 inches are its bread-and-butter work.

At approximately $40,000-$52,000 configured, the TL-2P costs about $5,000-$7,000 more than the TL-1P for the extra 18 inches of turning length. For shops that need long-bed production capability with conversational programming, the TL-2P delivers more Z-travel than any other Haas machine under $50K. The flatbed design and IPS system keep the operator barrier to entry low while the turret and power chuck provide genuine production capability. Specs derived from Haas TL-2 published data.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,219 mm (48 in) turning length is the longest in the Haas toolroom lathe series, handling extended shafts and barrel blanks
  • 8-station automatic turret and power chuck enable repeat production without manual tool changes or chuck operation
  • 3,000 RPM spindle standard provides good surface footage on aluminum and smaller-diameter finishing work
  • IPS conversational programming lets operators build programs without G-code, lowering the barrier to production CNC turning
  • At $40-52K, it delivers long-bed production capability at a fraction of the cost of an ST-30L or ST-35
  • Same NGC control as every Haas machine ensures consistent programming and operator training

Limitations

  • 10 hp spindle limits heavy roughing capacity, particularly on large-diameter steel parts
  • Flatbed design collects chips worse than slant-bed machines, requiring more frequent cleanup on production runs
  • 8-station turret is limited compared to 12-station turrets on ST-series production lathes
  • No live tooling or Y-axis option means secondary milling operations require a separate machine

Best For

Production batches of long parts including threaded rods, barrels, extended shafts, and tubular components Shops running repeat orders on parts longer than 30 inches that need automatic tool changing Gunsmiths and barrel manufacturers running production batches of barrel blanks up to 48 inches Job shops that need long-bed CNC turning capability without the investment of an ST-30L or ST-35 Training programs teaching production CNC turning on long parts with conversational programming

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Haas TL-2P cost?

Base price starts around $40,000. With toolholders, tailstock accessories, and coolant options, a production-ready TL-2P runs $45,000-$52,000. The power chuck and 8-station turret are standard, saving the cost of adding them to a base TL-2.

02 What is the difference between the TL-2P and TL-2?

The TL-2P adds a power chuck, automatic 8-station turret, and 3,000 RPM spindle as standard. The base TL-2 ships without a chuck or turret and has a 1,800 RPM spindle (3,000 RPM optional). The TL-2P is built for repeat production on long parts; the TL-2 is for one-offs and manual-style work.

03 Should I buy a TL-2P or an ST-30L?

The ST-30L is a substantially more capable production lathe with a 30 hp spindle, 12-station turret, and slant-bed design for better chip evacuation. It also costs roughly twice as much. The TL-2P is the choice when you need long-bed capability with conversational programming at a budget price point.

04 Can the TL-2P handle heavy interrupted cuts on long parts?

The 10 hp spindle with 146 Nm of torque handles light to moderate turning in steel and aluminum. For heavy interrupted cuts on large-diameter castings or forgings, you need the torque and power of an ST-series machine. The TL-2P is best suited for production turning of round bar stock and smooth-profile parts.
