Overview
The Haas ST-20L is the long-bed version of the redesigned ST-20 platform, extending the Z-axis to 813 mm (32 in) for shaft work, long fittings, and barstock parts that exceed the standard ST-20's 572 mm (22.5 in) reach. It shares the same re-engineered castings, A2-6 spindle nose, and 63.5 mm (2.5 in) bar capacity as the standard model.
The spindle delivers 14.9 kW (20 hp) and 203 Nm (150 ft-lb) of torque at 500 RPM, topping out at 4,000 RPM. Max swing is 533 mm (21 in) over the cross slide with a cutting diameter of 298 mm (11.75 in). The 88.9 mm (3.5 in) spindle bore and 210 mm (8.3 in) chuck handle a wide range of workholding configurations.
Axis travels are 213 mm (8.4 in) in X and 813 mm (32 in) in Z, with rapid traverse at 12 m/min (472 ipm) in X and 24 m/min (945 ipm) in Z. The 12-station bolt-on turret (BOT) is standard, with an optional BMT-65 turret available for shops planning a future upgrade to live tooling on the ST-20LY variant.
The NGC control provides conversational programming, G-code editing, and canned turning cycles. Operators already familiar with any Haas machine transition immediately.
At roughly $60,000-$90,000 configured, the ST-20L is the workhorse long-bed lathe in the Haas lineup. It covers the gap between the smaller ST-15L and the heavier ST-30L for shops turning parts in the 572-813 mm length range. Shaft manufacturers, hydraulic cylinder producers, and job shops with mixed part families that include occasional long work consistently choose the ST-20L for its balance of capability, footprint, and price.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 813 mm (32 in) Z-axis travel handles shafts, long fittings, and barstock parts that exceed the standard ST-20's 572 mm bed
- Same 2.5-inch bar capacity and 20 hp spindle as the standard ST-20 at only a modest long-bed premium
- Redesigned ST-20 castings provide improved rigidity and chip evacuation on the extended bed
- NGC control consistency across the Haas lineup minimizes operator retraining costs
- At $60-90K configured, significantly cheaper than comparable long-bed lathes from Mazak, Okuma, and Doosan
- Strong Haas HFO dealer network with same-day availability on common wear items
Limitations
- 20 hp spindle is modest for heavy roughing in stainless or Inconel on longer parts where cut forces increase
- No Y-axis or live tooling on the base ST-20L — off-center features require the ST-20LY at additional cost
- Longer bed increases footprint without adding rigidity for heavy interrupted cuts
- BOT turret lacks the rigidity of BMT tooling found on Y-axis variants and higher-end competitors

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Base price starts around $60,000. With tailstock, chip conveyor, bar feeder interface, and common options, expect $75,000-$90,000 configured. The long-bed premium over the standard ST-20 is roughly $5,000-$8,000.
02
The ST-20L extends the Z-axis from 572 mm (22.5 in) to 813 mm (32 in). The spindle, chuck, bar capacity, and X-axis specs are identical. Choose the L variant when your parts regularly exceed the standard 22.5-inch bed length.
03
The ST-20LY adds Y-axis travel and BMT-65 live tooling for cross-drilling, flat milling, and tapping. If your parts only need OD/ID turning and threading, the ST-20L saves $25,000-$35,000. If any parts require off-center features, the ST-20LY eliminates a second operation on a mill.
04
The ST-30L has 50% more torque (407 vs 203 Nm), larger bar capacity (101.6 vs 63.5 mm), a bigger chuck (264 vs 210 mm), and a longer Z-axis (1,016 vs 813 mm). The ST-30L costs $25,000-$30,000 more. Choose the ST-20L for lighter, mid-size work. Choose the ST-30L when you need more power, bore, and reach.
