Haas ST-35L

With 62.5 in (1,588 mm) between centers, the Haas ST-35L is a long-bed lathe for shafts, tubes and rolls that shorter machines cannot hold. Diameter capacity is 15 in (381 mm) under a 21 in (533 mm) swing, and the spindle is a 40 hp (29.8 kW) A2-8 unit with a 4.62 in (117.3 mm) bore.

Long work needs support, and the equipment list reflects that. A programmable tailstock with a #4 Morse taper is standard, as is a scissor-style Z-axis waycover. A steady rest provision is an extra-cost option, meant for extra-long parts or for machining a part face that a tailstock center would block. Haas also lists an extended tool pocket in the bulkhead as standard. It gives clearance for tools up to 30 in (762 mm) long, depending on workholding, which is what deep boring of long tube calls for.

The ST-28L is the nearest shorter machine with the same spindle figures: 42.5 in (1,080 mm) of turning length and a 13 in (330 mm) maximum turning diameter. Here both numbers grow, while X travel stays at 9.4 in (239 mm).

On a slender shaft the cut is limited by the part long before it is limited by the machine. The spindle gives 425 ft-lbf (576 N·m) at 325 rpm and runs to 3,200 rpm; for large-diameter steel the optional gearbox delivers 1,400 ft-lbf (1,898 N·m) at 150 rpm. Bar up to 4 in (102 mm) passes through the spindle. Z thrust is 5,100 lbf (22,686 N), about 24% above the 4,100 lbf (18,238 N) on X.

The turret has 12 stations. A 12-station BMT65 turret is optional and brings the maximum turning diameter to 13.75 in (349 mm). The machine ships on a 202 × 90 × 92 in (513 × 229 × 234 cm) pallet. Haas lists a starting price of US$141,995.
