Overview

The Haas ST-35L is the long-bed variant of the big-bore ST-35, extending the Z-axis to 1,016 mm (40 in) for long shafts, pipe, and large-bore tube work. It retains the ST-35's 29.8 kW (40 hp) spindle, 102 mm (4 in) bar capacity, 305 mm (12 in) chuck, and A2-8 spindle nose on the large-frame ST-30 platform.

The spindle delivers 576 Nm (425 ft-lb) of torque at 325 RPM, topping out at 3,200 RPM. The 117.3 mm (4.62 in) spindle bore comfortably handles 4-inch bar and tube stock. Max cutting envelope is 381 mm (15 in) diameter by 1,016 mm (40 in) length — matching the ST-30L's bed length with the ST-35's big-bore spindle.

Axis travels are 318 mm (12.5 in) in X and 1,016 mm (40 in) in Z with rapids at 24 m/min (945 ipm) on both axes. The 806 mm (31.75 in) swing provides clearance for larger chucks and fixtures. The 12-station BOT turret with 102 mm boring bar rear clearance handles large boring tools.

The ST-35L fills the gap between the mid-size ST-28L and the massive ST-40/ST-45 platforms for shops turning longer parts in 4-inch bar stock. Oil and gas component manufacturers, hydraulic cylinder shops, and heavy industrial producers running large-bore long work get serious capability without the weight and cost of the ST-40 frame.

At roughly $90,000-$125,000 configured, the ST-35L delivers 40 hp, 4-inch bore, and 40-inch Z-travel on the proven large-frame platform. The NGC control, HFO service network, and consistent Haas operator experience keep training and support straightforward.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,016 mm (40 in) Z-axis travel with 4-inch bore handles long pipe, tube, and shaft work that the ST-28L cannot reach
  • 40 hp spindle with 425 ft-lb of torque provides heavy roughing power on long, large-bore workpieces
  • Large-frame platform with 806 mm swing provides superior rigidity compared to mid-size ST-28L frame
  • 12-inch chuck on A2-8 nose matches the ST-28L's workholding on a significantly longer and more rigid bed
  • 102 mm boring bar rear clearance handles large boring tools without turret interference on long-reach work
  • At $90-125K configured, costs significantly less than the ST-40 while providing 4-inch bore on a 40-inch bed

Limitations

  • 3,200 RPM max spindle speed limits surface speeds on small-diameter work and aluminum finishing
  • Large-frame platform takes substantially more floor space than the mid-size ST-28L
  • No gearbox option for extreme low-speed torque unlike the ST-30 and ST-40 platforms
  • BOT turret rigidity trails BMT tooling on Y-axis variants for live tooling applications

Best For

Long pipe and tube machining in oil and gas requiring 4-inch bore and 40-inch turning length Hydraulic cylinder manufacturers machining longer cylinders that exceed the ST-28L's 32-inch Z-travel Heavy-duty shaft turning in carbon steel and alloy steel on large-bore, long-bed work Shops needing the ST-35's 40 hp and 4-inch bore on a 40-inch bed without the ST-40's heavier frame Production facilities running large-bore long parts where the mid-size ST-28L lacks rigidity

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Haas ST-35L cost?

Base price starts around $90,000. Adding tailstock, chip conveyor, high-pressure coolant, and common options pushes configured price to $105,000-$125,000. The long-bed premium over the standard ST-35 is approximately $5,000-$8,000.

02 How does the ST-35L compare to the ST-30L?

Both share the same large-frame platform and 40-inch Z-travel. The ST-35L upgrades to a 4-inch bar capacity (vs 4-inch on the ST-30L via its 101.6 mm bore), 40 hp (vs 30 hp), 12-inch chuck (vs 10.4-inch), and A2-8 nose (vs A2-8 on the ST-30). Choose the ST-35L when you need the extra 10 hp and larger chuck for heavier roughing on large-bore work.

03 What is the difference between the ST-35 and ST-35L?

The ST-35L extends the Z-axis from 660 mm (26 in) to 1,016 mm (40 in). All spindle, chuck, bore, and power specs are identical. Choose the L variant when your parts regularly exceed 26 inches in turning length.

04 Should I buy the ST-35L or the ST-40?

The ST-40 jumps to a 648 x 1,118 mm (25.5 x 44 in) cutting envelope, 15-inch chuck, optional 2-speed gearbox with 1,400 ft-lb torque, and A2-11 nose. If your parts fit within the ST-35L's 15 x 40-inch envelope and 4-inch bore is sufficient, the ST-35L saves $40-60K. The ST-40 is for truly large-frame work.
