Overview

The Haas ST-45S is a large-bore two-axis lathe on a short bed: 28 in (711 mm) of Z travel and turning length, a 30 in (762 mm) maximum turning diameter and a 7 in (178 mm) spindle bore behind an A2-11 nose. The spindle is rated 40 hp (29.8 kW) through a 2-speed gearbox, with 1,400 ft-lbf (1,898 N·m) at 150 rpm and a top speed of 1,400 rpm.

The ST-40S is the nearest relative, and the two share almost everything except the spindle. The ST-40S has the same 20 in (508 mm) of X travel, 28 in of Z, 35.5 in (902 mm) swing, 40 hp rating and 20,400 lb (9,253 kg) shipping weight, but an A2-8 nose, a 4.62 in (117.3 mm) bore and 2,400 rpm. The ST-45S bore is about 52% larger than the ST-40S bore, and the speed ceiling comes down to pay for it. Small-diameter work that needs rpm belongs on the other machine; large tube, pipe and hollow forgings belong here.
