Overview
The Haas ST-10Y is a compact turning center that adds a Y-axis and live tooling to the proven ST-10 platform, enabling complete turn-mill operations in a single setup. With a 3.5-inch bar capacity, 6,000 RPM main spindle, and a 12-station turret that accepts driven tools, the ST-10Y eliminates the secondary VMC operation shops often required for cross-holes, flats, keyways, and off-center features.
The Y-axis travel of +/- 2 inches (50.8 mm) is sufficient for milling off-center features on small-diameter parts. The machine supports sub-spindle configurations: the sub-spindle grips the part after the main spindle finishes, machines the back end, and ejects a finished part without manual intervention. This is particularly valuable for high-volume runs of medical implants, hydraulic valves, and fluid fittings.
The ST-10Y runs on the Haas NGC control with dedicated cycles for Y-axis milling, live-tool drilling and tapping, and C-axis contouring. The familiar Haas interface makes transition training minimal for shops already running Haas equipment. The machine pairs well with bar-feed automation for lights-out production.
Compared to Y-axis lathes from Nakamura-Tome, Okuma, or Mazak, the ST-10Y trades some rigidity and spindle power for a significantly lower price. For shops running small-to-medium volume precision parts in the 1-3 inch diameter range, the ST-10Y provides outstanding value and a fast return on investment.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Y-axis and live tooling eliminate secondary VMC operations for off-center features, reducing total cycle time
- Sub-spindle option enables complete part machining in a single setup for high-volume small-part production
- Compact footprint fits in tight cells and pairs well with bar-feed automation for lights-out operation
- Haas NGC control with dedicated Y-axis and live-tool cycles minimizes training time for existing Haas users
- Best-in-class price-to-capability ratio for small-part Y-axis turning in the North American market
Limitations
- 3.5-inch bar capacity limits use to smaller diameter parts; larger components require the ST-20Y or ST-30Y
- Y-axis travel of +/- 2 inches is modest compared to larger Y-axis lathes, limiting off-center milling reach
- Live tool spindle at 4,000 RPM is lower than dedicated milling spindles, affecting finish on complex mill features

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The ST-10Y provides +/- 2.0 inches of Y-axis travel, enabling off-center milling, cross-drilling, and slot milling offset from the part centerline.
02
The sub-spindle is an available option, not standard. It enables complete part machining, passing the part from main spindle to sub-spindle for back-end operations before automatic part ejection.
03
The ST-10Y supports bar stock up to 3.5 inches (88.9 mm) in diameter. For larger bars, the ST-20Y would be required.
04
The ST-10Y features a 12-station VDI-30 turret. All 12 stations can accept live tooling.
05
The ST-20Y is the next size up with a larger 4.5-inch bar capacity, higher spindle power, and more turning length. Both share the Y-axis and live tooling architecture.
