Goodway SW-42 — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the Goodway SW-42 that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from Goodway or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

The Goodway SW-42 is the large-bar machine in the SW Swiss-type series, with Ø42 of machining diameter through the guide bush and a 6,000 rpm spindle rated 5.5 kW (7.4 hp) continuous and 7.5 kW (10.1 hp) for 30 min. Goodway aims it at medium-sized workpieces and heavy cuts for a sliding-head lathe.

One mechanical detail supports that claim. The collet is closed by a rotary hydraulic cylinder, which the maker says provides ample clamping force for heavy cutting; many Swiss machines of smaller size clamp by other means. Stroke per chucking is 180 mm (7.1 in) with the guide bush and 110 mm (4.3 in) bushless. The bushless figure is long by Swiss standards, which makes bushless running practical for a wide range of parts.

Goodway prints two tooling layouts for the model. One has 5 O.D. tools, all on 20 mm (0.8 in) square shanks. The other has 6 O.D. tools, one on a 20 mm shank and five on 16 mm (0.6 in) shanks. Either way there are 5 I.D. tools in ER20 sleeves and from 4 to 10 cross live tools at 6,000 rpm. Hobbing, slotting and thread whirling holders can be mounted as needed.

Behind the cut-off, the sub-spindle chucks Ø42 mm (1.7 in), runs to 6,000 rpm and is rated 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) continuous, 5.5 kW (7.4 hp) for 30 min. Its ZB axis rapids at up to 30 m/min. on linear guideways. Four rear-end tools at 5,000 rpm complete the D variation. No Y2-axis is offered here; that is found on the SW-32II and SK-38.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Rotary hydraulic cylinder clamping, which Goodway relates to heavy cutting
  • 110 mm (4.3 in) of turning length per chucking even without the guide bush
  • From 4 to 10 cross live tools at 6,000 rpm
  • Sub-spindle chucks the full Ø42 mm (1.7 in) and is rated 5.5 kW (7.4 hp) for 30 min.
  • Holders for hobbing, slotting and thread whirling can be fitted

Limitations

  • Guide bush stroke is 180 mm (7.1 in), shorter than on the SW-32II
  • Rear-end tools are limited to 4, at 5,000 rpm
  • No Y2-axis or B-axis variation is listed
  • Spindle speed of 6,000 rpm is low for small-diameter work
06

Best For

Bar parts near the top of the Swiss range, up to Ø42 mm (1.7 in) at the sub-spindle Short parts run bushless to save remnant Connector, fitting and shaft work with polygon or thread whirling operations

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the capacity of the SW-42?

Maximum machining diameter is Ø42. Turning length per chucking is 180 mm (7.1 in) with the guide bush or 110 mm (4.3 in) bushless. The sub-spindle chucks Ø42 mm (1.7 in) and ejects parts up to 110 mm (4.3 in) long from the front.

02 Why does the SW-42 table show two tooling options?

Goodway lists two columns under the SW-42 name. One has 5 O.D. tools on 20 mm (0.8 in) square shanks. The other has 6 O.D. tools: one on a 20 mm shank and five on 16 mm (0.6 in) shanks. All other figures are identical.

03 What are the spindle ratings of the SW-42?

The main spindle runs to 6,000 rpm and is rated 5.5 kW (7.4 hp) continuous and 7.5 kW (10.1 hp) for 30 min. The sub-spindle also runs to 6,000 rpm, at 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) continuous and 5.5 kW (7.4 hp) for 30 min.

04 Can the SW-42 run without a guide bush?

Yes. Goodway calls it a hybrid guide bush design that can be switched between guide bush and bushless modes to suit production. In bushless mode each chucking gives 110 mm (4.3 in) of turning length.
