Overview

The Goodway SW-20II is a Ø20 mm (0.8 in) Swiss-type turning center with a 10,000 rpm main spindle, 220 mm (8.7 in) of guide bush stroke and up to 10 cross live tools. Twenty millimetre machines are the volume class of sliding-head lathe, and this second-generation model is Goodway's entry in it; the maker says structural rigidity rose by 20% over the previous generation.

Buyers have a choice of sub-spindle that the larger SW-32II does not give them. The standard sub-spindle runs to 8,000 rpm and is rated 1.5 kW (2.0 hp) continuous, 2.2 kW (3.0 hp) for 15 min. The optional built-in sub-spindle matches the main spindle at 10,000 rpm and 2.2 kW continuous, 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) for 15 min. Parts with real back-end turning deserve the built-in unit. Parts that only need a cut-off burr removed do not.

Main spindle power is likewise 2.2 kW (3.0 hp) continuous and 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) on the 15 min. rating. Tooling consists of 6 O.D. tools on 12 mm (0.5 in) shanks, 4 I.D. tools in ER16 sleeves, and between 5 and 10 cross live tools at 8,000 rpm. Bushless operation is possible, with 50 mm (2.0 in) of length per chucking.

Back working uses 4 rear-end tools at 8,000 rpm as standard in the D variation. The Y variation replaces them with a Y2-axis tool post carrying 8 tools on 60 mm (2.4 in) of travel, which allows off-center drilling and milling on the back of the part. Goodway counts 6 axes on the series: X, Y, Z, XB, ZB and Y2.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the SW-20II and the SW-32II?

Bar size and speed. The SW-20II takes Ø20 mm (0.8 in) bar at 10,000 rpm with a 2.2 kW (3.0 hp) continuous spindle. The SW-32II takes Ø32 mm (1.3 in) at 7,000 rpm with 5.5 kW (7.4 hp) continuous, and has the built-in sub-spindle as standard.

02 Which sub-spindle should I choose on the SW-20II?

The standard one runs to 8,000 rpm at 1.5 kW (2.0 hp) continuous and 2.2 kW (3.0 hp) for 15 min. The optional built-in sub-spindle runs to 10,000 rpm at 2.2 kW (3.0 hp) continuous and 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) for 15 min. Goodway describes the built-in type as high speed and low vibration.

03 How many live tools does the SW-20II have?

Between 5 and 10 cross live tools at up to 8,000 rpm on the front. Goodway states that designated positions can take 90° live tooling, supporting up to 5 front and 2 back live tools. The back has 4 rear-end tools, or 8 with the Y2-axis option.

04 What does the Y2-axis add on the SW-20II?

A back working tool post that moves 60 mm (2.4 in) in Y2 and holds 8 tools. Goodway says it enables off-center drilling, tapping and milling on the rear end of workpieces. It is an option, sold as the Y variation.
