How much does the Tsugami S257 cost?

Estimated price range

Est.$175,000 - $235,000

Our best estimate for a swiss-type lathe in this class — not a quote from Tsugami. Configuration moves it a long way.

Tsugami S257 — price

Est.$175,000 - $235,000

This is our best estimate for a machine of this type and class, built from published prices of comparable swiss-type lathes and typical dealer pricing. Tsugami has not published a list price for the Tsugami S257 that we can cite. Treat it as a planning number, not a quote.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

The Tsugami S257 is a 25 mm (0.984 in) Swiss-type lathe with seven axes, including a Y axis, and room for up to 28 tools. The listed figures give 10,000 RPM on both the main and the sub spindle, 3.7 kW (5 hp) on the main spindle and a Fanuc 32i-B control. The model does not appear on Tsugami's current pages, so anyone looking at an S257, new or used, should confirm each figure on the actual machine.

The strokes are the most useful part of the table. On the main side Z1 travel is 200 mm (7.87 in) and X1 is 28 mm (1.10 in); the back side has X2 of 28 mm and Z2 of 95 mm (3.74 in). With the guide bushing fitted as standard, the 200 mm of Z1 sets the longest feature that can be turned in one headstock stroke. The bushing can be removed for non-guide-bushing work on short parts.

Rapid traverse is listed at 32 m/min (1,260 ipm), positioning accuracy at ±0.003 mm and repeatability at ±0.002 mm. The machine weight is given as 2,300 kg (5,071 lb), light next to the 3,750 kg (8,267 lb) of the 20 mm S205-II, which is one more reason to check the specification of a particular S257 before relying on it.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 25 mm (0.984 in) bar capacity with seven axes, including a Y axis
  • Up to 28 tools listed, a large layout for a 25 mm machine
  • Z1 travel of 200 mm (7.87 in) with a standard, removable guide bushing
  • Listed rapid traverse of 32 m/min (1,260 ipm)

Limitations

  • Not on Tsugami's current pages, so the listed figures need confirming on the machine itself
  • Z2 travel of 95 mm (3.74 in) limits the length of back-end features
  • The table does not say how many tool positions can be driven or how fast live tools run
  • Only the main spindle has a power figure; sub spindle power is not listed

Best For

Bar parts up to 25 mm (0.984 in) diameter Parts needing off-centre work on a Y axis Turned features up to 200 mm (7.87 in) per headstock stroke

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What bar size does the S257 take?

25 mm (0.984 in) is the listed maximum bar capacity. That puts the S257 a size above the 20 mm (0.79 in) S205-II, and makes it a candidate for parts just too large for a 20 mm machine.

02 How long a feature can the S257 turn in one stroke?

Z1 travel is listed as 200 mm (7.87 in), with the guide bushing standard. Longer parts need re-chucking during the cycle. On the back side, Z2 travel is 95 mm (3.74 in), which limits how far back-end tools can reach along the part.

03 How many axes and tools does the S257 have?

Seven axes are listed, including a Y axis, and up to 28 tools. The table does not say how many of those positions can take live tools or how fast live tools run, so check the tooling layout of the machine in question.

04 Is the S257 still offered by Tsugami?

It does not appear on Tsugami's current product pages. There is no current Tsugami table to compare against, so treat the accuracy, weight and stroke figures shown here as items to confirm on any S257 being offered.
