Overview

The Goodway SK-38 is the most heavily equipped sliding-head lathe in Goodway's range: Ø38 mm (1.5 in) bar through the guide bush, a B-axis tool unit, a Y2-axis back tool post and up to 9 controlled axes. Where the SW machines are production Swiss lathes, the SK-38 is built for parts with angled holes and contoured features that would otherwise go to a mill.

Main and sub-spindle are built-in motor types, both running to 7,000 rpm. The main spindle is rated 7.5 kW (10.1 hp) continuous and 11 kW (14.8 hp) for 10 min., the sub-spindle 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) and 5.5 kW (7.4 hp). With the guide bush fitted, one chucking turns 320 mm (12.6 in) of length. The machine can also run bushless, where capacity rises to Ø42 mm (1.7 in) but length per chucking falls to 95 mm (3.7 in). Bushless running wastes less bar and suits short parts.

Tooling sits on a gantry type structure. There are 7 O.D. turning tools on 16 mm or 20 mm (0.8 in) shanks, 5 I.D. tools and 4 cross live tools with ER20 collets at 6,000 rpm. The B-axis unit carries 3 live tools facing the main spindle and 3 facing the sub-spindle, ER16, driven by a 2.2 kW (3.0 hp) motor. Goodway states that the B-axis indexes within a range of 135° and supports 4 axes simultaneous contour milling.

For the back of the part, 8 rear-end tools run at up to 6,000 rpm, and the Y2-axis moves them 69 mm (2.7 in). Five variations, A, C, D, Y and B, add these systems step by step.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • B-axis live tooling: 3 tools to the front and 3 to the rear, indexing within 135°
  • Y2-axis back tool post with 8 tools and 69 mm (2.7 in) of travel
  • Hybrid guide bush: Ø38 mm (1.5 in) with bush or Ø42 mm (1.7 in) bushless
  • Built-in main spindle rated 11 kW (14.8 hp) for 10 min. at up to 7,000 rpm
  • 320 mm (12.6 in) of turning length per chucking with the guide bush

Limitations

  • B-axis and Y2-axis exist only in the B and Y variations; the base A model has neither
  • Live tool speed is 6,000 rpm throughout
  • Bushless turning length is 95 mm (3.7 in) per chucking
  • The B-axis live tool motor is 2.2 kW (3.0 hp), suited to small cutters

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What bar diameter does the SK-38 take?

Ø38 mm (1.5 in) when running with the guide bush and Ø42 mm (1.7 in) in bushless mode. Maximum turning length per chucking is 320 mm (12.6 in) with the bush and 95 mm (3.7 in) without. The sub-spindle chucks up to Ø38 mm (1.5 in).

02 What does the B-axis on the SK-38 do?

It tilts a group of live tools so the machine can drill, tap and mill at an angle. Goodway lists 3 front and 3 rear live tools with ER16 collets, a 2.2 kW (3.0 hp) drive and 6,000 rpm, indexing within a range of 135° with a minimum increment of 0.001°.

03 Which versions of the SK-38 are there?

Five. A is the basic model. C adds a sub-spindle. D adds a backworking tooling system to that. Y adds the Y2-axis, and B adds the B-axis on top of everything else. Goodway describes up to 9 axes control.

04 How many tools does the SK-38 carry?

On the main side: 7 O.D. tools, 5 I.D. tools and 4 cross live tools. On the back: 8 rear-end tools, on the Y2-axis in the Y and B variations. The B-axis unit adds 2 cross live tools and 3 plus 3 angled live tools.
