Overview

The Citizen Cincom L12 Type VII is a 7-axis sliding headstock CNC automatic lathe with 12mm bar capacity that represents the standard-production workhorse in Citizen's small-diameter Swiss-type range. While the B-series covers basic turning, the L12-VII steps into serious production territory with a 15,000 RPM main spindle, a 10,000 RPM back spindle, 27 tool positions including live tooling at 10,000 RPM, and Citizen's LFV (Low Frequency Vibration) chip-breaking technology. This is the machine shops reach for when parts demand tight tolerances, complex features, and reliable unattended production in difficult-to-machine materials.

The L12-VII's main spindle delivers 2.2/3.7 kW of power through a 20mm bore, handling bar stock up to 12mm diameter with an optional 16mm capacity. Maximum machining length reaches 135mm per chucking in guide bushing mode and 30mm in guide-bushless mode. The 15,000 RPM spindle speed in guide bushing mode (12,000 RPM guide-bushless) provides excellent surface finish capability and productive cycle times, particularly in aluminum and brass. The back spindle's 10,000 RPM speed with 0.4/0.75 kW power handles secondary operations including back-facing, back-drilling up to 6mm, and back-tapping to M5.

Citizen's LFV technology is the L12-VII's most significant advantage over the B-series machines. LFV oscillates the cutting tool in controlled patterns synchronized with spindle rotation, creating deliberate chip breaking in materials that normally produce long, stringy chips. This is transformative for medical-grade stainless steel, titanium, and engineering plastics like PEEK—materials that dominate small-precision-component manufacturing. With LFV engaged, the L12-VII can sustain extended lights-out production runs without the chip-wrapping, tool breakage, and machine stoppages that plague conventional Swiss machines in these materials.

The 27 tool positions include 6 gang turning tools, 4-9 gang rotary tools, and 4 back tool post positions. All axes achieve rapid traverse rates of 35 m/min, keeping cycle times competitive. At 1,700 kg with a 1,000mm center height, the L12-VII maintains a compact footprint while delivering substantially more capability than the B-series machines. The Mitsubishi Meldas control with Citizen's proprietary software handles the 7-axis simultaneous control with the processing speed and programming flexibility required for complex multi-feature parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a Citizen Cincom L12 Type VII cost?

A new Citizen Cincom L12-VII typically runs $120,000-$200,000 depending on options and configuration. The base 7-axis model with LFV starts around $130,000-$150,000, with additional options like the 16mm bar capacity upgrade and specialized tooling pushing the price higher. Used L12-VII machines from 2015-2022 typically sell for $50,000-$100,000 depending on age, condition, and hours.

02 What is the difference between the L12-VII and L12-X?

The L12-X is the more capable variant, adding a Y2 axis on the back tool post, a modular tooling system, and expanding tool positions from 27 to 38. The L12-X also upgrades the back spindle to 12,000 RPM with 0.75/1.15 kW power. The L12-VII is the standard production model for shops that need LFV and solid Swiss capability without the L12-X's maximum flexibility and tool count.

03 How does LFV work on the L12-VII?

LFV (Low Frequency Vibration) oscillates the cutting tool in controlled patterns synchronized with spindle rotation. This creates deliberate interruptions in the chip that cause it to break into short, manageable segments regardless of the material being cut. LFV is activated programmatically and can be engaged or disengaged for individual tools within a cycle. It's most beneficial when machining materials that produce long, stringy chips—stainless steel, titanium, copper, and engineering plastics.

04 Can the L12-VII run guide-bushless?

Yes. The L12-VII supports guide-bushless (GBL) operation with a reduced maximum machining length of 30mm. In GBL mode, the main spindle speed reduces to 12,000 RPM. Guide-bushless operation reduces bar remnant waste and is preferred for shorter parts with low length-to-diameter ratios. Switching between guide bush and guide-bushless modes requires a mechanical changeover.

05 What control does the L12-VII use?

The L12-VII uses a Mitsubishi Meldas control with Citizen's proprietary software. This provides fast processing speeds for 7-axis simultaneous control, multi-line programming with superimposed and synchronized axis control, and a user-friendly editing environment. The control is consistent across the entire Cincom range, so operators familiar with any Citizen machine can transition to the L12-VII with minimal retraining.

06 How does the L12-VII compare to the Star SR-10J?

Both are top-tier small-diameter Swiss lathes. The Citizen L12-VII's key advantages are LFV chip-breaking technology and a 15,000 RPM main spindle. The Star SR-10J features a hydraulic-free design for lower maintenance and power consumption. Both offer similar bar capacity and dual-spindle capability. The choice typically comes down to whether LFV or hydraulic-free operation is more valuable for your part mix and materials.
