Overview

The Glebar TF-9D is a compact infeed and thrufeed centerless grinder under computer control, sized for parts from 0.002 in (0.05 mm) to 2.5 in (63.5 mm) in diameter. Its work wheel is 9 in (229 mm) in diameter and 8.625 in (219 mm) wide, and the main spindle is offered at 7.5 hp (5.6 kW), 10 hp (7.5 kW) or 15 hp (11 kW). Glebar lists catheters, guidewires and spinal cord stimulators among its uses: soft polymers and hard metals on one machine.

Infeed length is 8 in (200 mm). Thrufeed has no length limit. The movable slide is closed-loop on a linear scale with 0.1 µm (0.000004 in) resolution, the upper and lower slides position independently, and infeed and thrufeed cycles are built into the control with programmable inputs and positions. Stated diameter accuracy and roundness are both 0.00005 in (1.3 µm). An interface to measuring instruments allows automatic size compensation.

Against the GT-610, the TF-9D is the lighter machine with the bigger opening. It takes parts to 2.5 in (63.5 mm) where the GT-610 stops at 2.0 in (50.8 mm), and it weighs 2,085 lb (946 kg) with a granite bed against 3,130 lb (1,420 kg). The GT-610 answers with a 10 in (254 mm) work wheel and a 6 in (152 mm) regulating wheel. The regulating wheel here is 4 in (100 mm) and runs from 10 to 400 rpm.

The footprint is 58 x 31 x 71 in (147 x 79 x 180 cm). The bed is 6 in (152 mm) thick granite, with cast iron also available. Electrical supply is 480 VAC, 60 Hz, drawing 40 A with the 15 hp motor and 25 A with the 7.5 hp motor. Air use is 4 CFM at 80 PSI.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Grinds from 0.002 in (0.05 mm) to 2.5 in (63.5 mm) in diameter in a 58 x 31 x 71 in (147 x 79 x 180 cm) footprint
  • Closed-loop slide control on a linear scale with 0.1 µm (0.000004 in) resolution
  • Diameter accuracy and roundness both stated as 0.00005 in (1.3 µm)
  • Spindle motor choice of 7.5 hp (5.6 kW), 10 hp (7.5 kW) or 15 hp (11 kW)
  • 8.625 in (219 mm) wide work wheel on a machine that weighs 2,085 lb (946 kg) with granite bed
  • Built-in infeed and thrufeed cycles with programmable inputs and positioning

Limitations

  • Infeed grinding length is limited to 8 in (200 mm)
  • The 4 in (100 mm) regulating wheel is smaller than the 6 in (152 mm) wheel of the GT-610
  • Wheel dressers are listed as available stationary and removable units; no CNC dresser is listed, unlike the GT-610 CNC
  • Current draw depends on the motor ordered: 40 A at 15 hp, 25 A at 7.5 hp on 480 VAC, so the supply must be sized to the spindle chosen

Best For

Catheter bodies and other soft polymer parts Guidewires and pins ground thrufeed with no length limit Spinal cord stimulator components Infeed forming of small shaped parts up to 8 in (200 mm) long Shops that need 2.5 in (63.5 mm) capacity in a small footprint

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What diameter range does the Glebar TF-9D cover?

Minimum 0.002 in (0.05 mm) and maximum 2.5 in (63.5 mm). Grinding length is 8 in (200 mm) for infeed work and unlimited for thrufeed work.

02 Which spindle motors are available on the TF-9D?

Glebar lists work wheel power as 7.5 hp (5.6 kW), 10 hp (7.5 kW) or 15 hp (11 kW). The work wheel runs at 2,400 rpm. On a 480 VAC, 60 Hz supply the machine draws 40 A with the 15 hp motor and 25 A with the 7.5 hp motor.

03 How does the TF-9D compare with the GT-610?

The TF-9D has the larger capacity, 2.5 in (63.5 mm) against the GT-610's 2.0 in (50.8 mm), and is lighter at 2,085 lb (946 kg) against 3,130 lb (1,420 kg). The GT-610 has a 10 in (254 mm) work wheel and a 6 in (152 mm) regulating wheel; the TF-9D uses a 9 in (229 mm) work wheel and a 4 in (100 mm) regulating wheel.

04 Is the TF-9D a CNC machine?

Glebar describes it as using computer controls. It has a touch screen HMI, closed-loop control from a linear scale on the movable slide with 0.1 µm (0.000004 in) resolution, automatic infeed for forming small shaped parts, and built-in infeed and thrufeed cycles with programmable inputs and positioning.

05 What bed does the TF-9D use?

A 6 in (152 mm) thick granite bed, and Glebar notes the machine is also available on cast iron. The listed weight of 2,085 lb (946 kg) is with the granite bed.
