Overview

The AgieCharmilles FORM F 450 is the middle size of GF Machining Solutions' FORM F series, a die-sinking EDM sold as a base machine that can be upgraded later. It has 450 x 300 x 350 mm of X, Y and Z travel, a 600 l dielectric capacity, and takes workpieces up to 820 x 540 x 270 mm and 800 kg. Best surface finish is 0.4 μm, with 0.10 μm as an option.

That split between standard and optional runs through the whole machine. The ISPG generator comes in a standard 40 A configuration and can be expanded to 80 A for higher erosion rates. GF sells Performance, Advanced Materials, Tooling and Precision Technology packages that add machining power, surface quality and application technologies to an installed machine, so a shop can start with the base specification and buy capability when the work calls for it. Automation is optional too: a four-position linear tool changer, an 18-position rotary tool changer or a left-side automation interface.

What comes with the series is the process control. iGAP manages the lateral spark gap, TECFORM sets parameters for graphite roughing and copper finishing, and an application database covers common cavity geometries and materials. High-resolution glass scales and encoder motors provide the axis feedback, and the AC FORM HMI adds guided workflows and measurement cycles. Econowatt lowers power draw when idle.

One figure needs attention: the electrode weight limit is 10 kg, against 50 kg on the AgieCharmilles FORM X 400. Large graphite electrodes for deep cavities can exceed that. The machine weighs 2940 kg without dielectric in a 2104 x 2022 x 2808 mm footprint.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is included as standard on the AgieCharmilles FORM F 450?

The ISPG generator in its 40 A configuration, iGAP, TECFORM, the application database, glass scales and encoder motors, Econowatt and the AC FORM HMI. The 80 A generator, the 0.10 μm finish, the tool changers and the performance packages are options.

02 How heavy can electrodes be on the FORM F 450?

The table lists 10 kg as the maximum electrode weight. That suits copper and small graphite electrodes; large graphite electrodes with holders for deep cavities should be weighed first. Workpieces can weigh up to 800 kg.

03 Which tool changer options are there?

GF lists a four-position linear tool changer, an 18-position rotary tool changer or a left-side automation interface as options for the FORM F series. The series is also designed for integration with SYSTEM 3R automation.

04 How does the FORM F 450 compare with the AgieCharmilles FORM X 400?

The AgieCharmilles FORM X 400 has 400 x 300 x 350 mm travels, a 0.05 μm best finish and 50 kg electrodes, on a 3837 kg machine. The FORM F 450 has more X at 450 mm, lists 0.4 μm (0.10 μm optional) and 10 kg electrodes, and weighs 2940 kg.
