Overview

The GF Machining Solutions AgieCharmilles FORM S 350 is a high-precision compact sinker EDM at the top of the GF Machining Solutions technology hierarchy for the 350mm-class. The S designation denotes the Specialist tier, engineered for micromachining, precision connector molds, watch component tooling, and applications where positioning resolution matters more than removal rate.

The FORM S 350 provides X/Y/Z travels of 350 x 250 x 300 mm with a maximum workpiece size of 790 x 530 x 300 mm and a 500 kg capacity. Its 50-nanometer position resolution using linear glass scales and dual thermostabilization system set it apart from production-class sinker EDMs.

The machine features the ISPG (Intelligent Solid-state Power Generator) with a micromachining module optimized for extremely fine discharge energies. Surface finish reaches Ra 0.08 micron.

The FORM S 350 includes a 500 x 400 mm worktable, supports electrodes up to 25 kg, is System 3R compatible, and runs on the AC FORM CNC control with the full technology database.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 50-nanometer position resolution enables micromachining beyond standard sinker EDMs
  • ISPG with micromachining module provides extremely fine discharge energies for sub-100-micron features
  • Dual thermostabilization compensates for thermal drift from both machine structure and dielectric bath
  • Ra 0.08 µm surface finish capability matches the FORM X series in a compact platform
  • System 3R compatible for automated electrode handling and GF milling machine workflows
  • AC FORM CNC with full technology database minimizes setup time across material combinations

Limitations

  • 25 kg electrode weight limit is more restrictive than the 50 kg capacity on FORM P and FORM X machines
  • 350 x 250 mm X/Y travel restricts the machine to small-to-medium cavities
  • Premium pricing reflects micromachining technology that general mold shops may not need
  • 500 kg workpiece weight capacity limits mold base size

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What makes the FORM S different from FORM P and E?

Specialist tier for micromachining. Adds 50nm position resolution, ISPG with micromachining module, and dual thermostabilization.

02 What is the ISPG micromachining module?

Generates extremely small, precisely controlled discharge pulses for burning micro-features with minimal heat-affected zone.

03 Is the FORM S 350 suitable for general mold work?

It can handle general work, but the FORM P 350 or FORM E 350 are more cost-effective for standard applications.

04 Best electrode materials for the ISPG?

Fine-grain graphite and copper-tungsten electrodes are most commonly used for micromachining applications.
