Overview
The GF AgieCharmilles CUT S is the speed-optimized machine in the AgieCharmilles wire EDM lineup. When throughput and cycle time drive the bottom line, the CUT S delivers some of the fastest cutting speeds in the GF portfolio while maintaining excellent surface finish quality.
With 350 x 250 x 256 mm (13.8 x 9.8 x 10.1 in) of X/Y/Z travel, the CUT S shares its compact envelope with the CUT E and CUT X. But the IPG (Intelligent Power Generator) under the hood is a completely different animal. On standard D2 tool steel, the CUT S cuts roughly 20-30 percent faster than the CUT E series. The generator delivers up to 250 mm2/min cutting speed on 50 mm thick steel, putting it in the same league as the Sodick ALN series.
Surface finish capability is excellent despite the speed focus. Standard machining delivers Ra 0.10 um (4 uin), and with optimized skim passes the machine pushes into sub-Ra 0.08 um territory for mirror-quality applications. GF achieved this by developing spark strategies that maximize metal removal during roughing without compromising the thermal damage layer.
The Intelligent Collision Protection (ICP) system monitors axis loads in real time and stops all movement before a collision can damage wire guides, the head, or the workpiece. For shops running lights-out, ICP provides the confidence to walk away from the machine. It also enables faster rapid traverse speeds since the machine reacts to obstacles rather than relying on conservative programmed clearances.
The UNIQUA HMI includes speed-optimization features that analyze cutting conditions and adjust parameters in real time. Positioning accuracy is 2 um across the full travel range. Wire compatibility spans 0.10 to 0.30 mm standard. U/V travel is +/-60 mm for taper work.
New CUT S machines price between $140,000 and $200,000. Used machines from 2018-2022 trade in the $70,000-$120,000 range.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- IPG generator delivers 20-30 percent faster cutting speeds than the CUT E series, significantly improving production throughput
- Intelligent Collision Protection (ICP) prevents crashes during unattended operation, enabling true lights-out confidence
- Ra 0.10 um surface finish capability handles demanding mold texturing and optical-quality surface requirements
- Automatic parameter optimization continuously adjusts cutting conditions to maximize speed without sacrificing accuracy
- Standard fine-wire capability down to 0.10 mm covers both high-speed production cutting and precision detail work
- Active thermal management maintains 2 um accuracy across long production runs without operator intervention
Limitations
- 350 mm X-travel limits workpiece size; shops needing more envelope should look at the CUT S 400 or CUT 1000
- Price premium over the CUT X is substantial and hard to justify for low-volume shops
- IPG generator requires more careful maintenance intervals than the simpler ISPG on the CUT E series
- GF Machining Solutions EDM service network can be slower than Makino or Mitsubishi in some North American regions
- 500 kg workpiece capacity is adequate but not exceptional for a machine at this price point

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New CUT S machines price between $140,000 and $200,000. Used machines from 2018-2022 sell in the $70,000-$120,000 range.
02
Roughly 20-30 percent faster on comparable materials. On 50 mm D2 tool steel, this saves 15-20 minutes per part.
03
ICP monitors axis loads in real time and stops movement before collisions occur. Critical for unattended operation.
04
CUT S prioritizes speed for production throughput. CUT P prioritizes sub-micron accuracy and surface finish for ultra-precision work.
05
Yes. The IPG generator handles all conductive materials including tungsten carbide, titanium, Inconel, PCD, and CBN.
