Overview

The Fryer HR-40 is where the HR series becomes a 50 taper machine. It is a box way, fixed spindle horizontal machining center with 40 x 29 x 25 in (1,016 x 737 x 635 mm) of travel, a CAT 50 or BT-50 spindle and a 40 hp (29.8 kW) peak motor that delivers 306 ft-lb (415 Nm) at 350 rpm.

It is also the quickest model of the series. Rapids are 1,000 ipm (25.4 m/min) on X, Y and Z, against 750 ipm (19.1 m/min) on the HR-70, and the cutting feed rate goes to 600 ipm (15.2 m/min). With a weight of 18,000 lb (8,165 kg) and a 150 x 100 in (3,810 x 2,540 mm) footprint it is the HR that fits an ordinary job shop bay.

The work table is 24 x 51 in (610 x 1,295 mm) and takes 6,000 lb (2,722 kg). For this model alone Fryer lists a 24" built-in 4th axis rotary table, mounted flush in the centre of that table, with full contouring, 12 arc/sec accuracy and 6,000 lbs capacity. Without the rotary table the machine is a horizontal mill for long parts along X; with it, it machines four sides of a cube-shaped part.

Tooling is heavy-duty. The 24 station arm type changer handles tools up to 16 in (406 mm) long and 33.0 lb, with a 4 seconds tool change, and 40 or 60 tool changers are options. A 2-speed ZF gearbox is optional, and Fryer's table quotes 1,224 ft-lb (1,660 Nm) with it.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • CAT 50 or BT-50 spindle with 306 ft-lb (415 Nm) at 350 rpm from a 40 hp (29.8 kW) peak motor
  • 1,000 ipm (25.4 m/min) rapids, the fastest in the HR series
  • 24" built-in 4th axis rotary table available for this model
  • 24 station arm type changer for tools up to 33.0 lb
  • 100 gal (379 L) coolant tank

Limitations

  • Base spindle speed is 6,000 rpm; 8,000 and 10,000 rpm are listed in brackets as alternatives
  • Z travel is 25 in (635 mm), well short of the 36 in (914 mm) of the HR-70
  • Needs an 80 A supply at 480 VAC
  • The rotary table and full machine guard are options
