Overview

The Fryer HR-14 is the small exception in the HR series of fixed spindle horizontal machining centers. Where the HR-40 and larger models carry a CAT 50 or BT-50 spindle, the HR-14 has a CAT 40 or BT-40 spindle at 60 - 8,000 rpm with a 20 hp (14.9 kW) peak motor, and its travels are 40 x 20 x 20 in (1,016 x 508 x 508 mm). Fryer's own series description sets it apart with the words "except HR-14".

In size and layout it is a horizontal counterpart to the MB toolroom bed mills. The table is 16 x 54 in (406 x 1,372 mm), the footprint is 113 x 80 in (2,870 x 2,032 mm) and the weight is 9,000 lb (4,082 kg). Turning the spindle on its side gives what a bed mill cannot: chips fall away from the cut, arbor-style and side-cutting tools work naturally, and with the built-in rotary table option a part can be machined on several sides in one clamping.

That rotary option is specified in the table as a 16 in (406 mm) platter turning at up to 33 rpm, with a load of 3,000 lb (1,361 kg) and positioning accuracy of 12 arc sec. Without it the plain table carries 3,500 lb (1,588 kg).

A 16 station arm type changer serves the spindle with a 4 seconds tool change. Torque is 80 ft-lb (108 Nm) at 350 rpm in 1 range, rapids are 600 ipm (15.2 m/min) and the cutting feed rate stops at 400 ipm (10.2 m/min). It is a machine for small lots of prismatic parts, not for the heavy milling the HR-40 is built for.

  • Built-in rotary table option with a 16 in (406 mm) platter for multi-side machining
  • 16 station arm type tool changer
  • CAT 40 or BT-40 spindle at 60 - 8,000 rpm, 20 hp (14.9 kW) peak
  • Table load of 3,500 lb (1,588 kg) on a 16 x 54 in (406 x 1,372 mm) table

Limitations

  • 40 taper and 80 ft-lb (108 Nm), far below the 306 ft-lb (415 Nm) of the HR-40
  • Y and Z travels are 20 in (508 mm) each
  • Cutting feed rate is limited to 400 ipm (10.2 m/min)
  • The rotary table is an option, not part of the base machine

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How is the Fryer HR-14 different from the other HR models?

It is the 40 taper model. The HR-14 has a CAT 40 or BT-40 spindle at 60 - 8,000 rpm with 20 hp (14.9 kW) peak and a 16 station tool changer. The HR-40 and larger models have a CAT 50 or BT-50 spindle at 60 - 6,000 rpm with 40 hp (29.8 kW) peak and a 24 station changer.

02 What are the travels of the HR-14?

X, Y and Z are 40 x 20 x 20 in (1,016 x 508 x 508 mm). Spindle nose to table center ranges from 29 to 9 in (737 - 229 mm) and spindle center to table top from 22 to 2 in (559 - 51 mm).

03 Does the HR-14 have a rotary table?

As a built-in option. Fryer's table lists a 16 in (406 mm) platter, a maximum rotation speed of 33 rpm, a load of 3,000 lb (1,361 kg), positioning accuracy of 12 arc sec and repeatability of 5 arc sec.

04 What power does the HR-14 need?

40 A at 380-500 VAC, with 208-250 VAC shown in brackets. Air is 3 cfm (85 L/min) at 90 psi (6.2 bar). The coolant tank holds 12 gal (45 L) and the pump delivers 3 gpm (11 L/min).
