Overview

The Campro NT-208M adds milling to the box-way NT-208 lathe. It keeps the 8 in chuck, the tailstock and the Ø420 mm (Ø16.5 in) by 550 mm (21.6 in) turning envelope, and replaces the plain turret with a 12-station servo live turret and a C axis.

Campro's description of the model is short: a BMT living turret and C-axis control that enable the machine to perform milling functions, on hardened precision box guideways and a one-piece 30° slant bed. The turret interface is BMT-55 with □25 / Ø40 mm tooling. Driven tools turn at up to 5,000 rpm from a turret servo motor of 2.2 / 3.7 kW, and the C axis indexes in 0.001° steps.

In practice that covers the common secondary operations on turned parts: cross drilling, tapping on a bolt circle, milling flats and keyways on the centreline. The modest turret motor suits small and medium tools. Since there is no Y axis here, a slot wider than the cutter or a hole off the centreline calls for the NT-208Y.

The turning side is unchanged from the 2-axis machine. The A2-6 spindle has an 11 / 15 kW (20 HP) motor, a 4,200 rpm limit and a Ø52 mm hole through the draw tube. A 10 in chuck is listed as an option on this version. The tailstock quill is Ø80 mm (Ø3.1 in) with 120 mm (4.7 in) of travel.

One gap should be noted. Campro's page prints the X / Z rapid row twice with different values, so no rapid figure is given here. The machine measures 3,839 x 1,950 x 1,785 mm (W x D x H), weighs 4,200 kg (9,259 lb) and needs 25 kVA.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 12-station servo live turret (BMT-55) with 5,000 rpm driven tools
  • C axis with 0.001° indexing
  • Box guideways on a one-piece 30° slant bed, per Campro
  • Tailstock retained: Ø80 mm (Ø3.1 in) quill, 120 mm (4.7 in) travel
  • Same compact size as the 2-axis NT-208 (Box) at 4,200 kg (9,259 lb)

Limitations

  • Turret servo motor of 2.2 / 3.7 kW limits milling to light cuts
  • No Y axis and no sub-spindle on this version
  • The maker's page gives two conflicting rapid traverse rows
  • Needs 25 kVA, against 20 kVA for the NT-208 (Box)
06

Best For

Turned parts with cross holes, tapped bolt circles and centreline keyways Shaft work up to 550 mm (21.6 in) supported by the tailstock Heavy turning cuts followed by light milling in one chucking Shops adding live tooling without the cost of a Y axis machine

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does the M stand for on the NT-208M?

Milling. The NT-208M has a servo live turret with 12 stations on a BMT-55 interface and C-axis control, which Campro says enables the machine to perform milling functions. Maximum tool speed is 5,000 rpm and the turret servo motor is 2.2 / 3.7 kW.

02 What can the NT-208M turn?

Maximum turning diameter is Ø420 mm (Ø16.5 in) and maximum turning length 550 mm (21.6 in). Swing over the bed is Ø580 mm (Ø22.8 in) and over the carriage Ø390 mm (Ø15.3 in). X travel is 210 + 20 mm and Z travel 570 mm (22.4 in).

03 What is the difference between the NT-208M and the NT-208SM?

The NT-208SM has a sub-spindle with a 6 in chuck in place of the tailstock, and its Z travel is 630 mm (24.8 in). The NT-208M keeps a tailstock with a Ø80 mm (Ø3.1 in) quill. Both share the 8 in main chuck, the 11 / 15 kW (20 HP) spindle and the live turret.

04 What spindle does the NT-208M have?

An A2-6 spindle nose with an 8 in hydraulic chuck, 10 in optional. The spindle motor is 11 / 15 kW (20 HP), the maximum speed 4,200 rpm and the hole through the draw tube Ø52 mm (Ø2.04 in).
