Overview

The KAAST A-Turn 300/700 is a CNC turning center with a 500 mm (19.7 in) maximum turning diameter, a 700 mm (27.6 in) maximum turning length, a 12-station turret and a tailstock with an MT5 quill. In base form it is an X and Z machine under the FANUC 0i-T control. A C axis and live tooling are both listed as options.

That option list decides what kind of machine arrives. Ordered without it, this is a lathe for turning, boring and threading. With it, the C axis indexes in steps of 0.01° and the driven tools run to 4,000 rpm on either a 3.7 kW (5 hp) or a 4.5 kW (6 hp) motor. For off-center milling KAAST has the A-Turn SYM 300 Y, which adds a Y axis with a rapid of 10 m/min (393 in/min) but has a shorter maximum turning length of 540 mm (21 in).

The spindle is listed at 18.5 kW (25 hp) with a 22 kW (30 hp) option, on an A2-8 nose with A2-11 optional, and carries a 10 in chuck with 12 and 15 in options. Standard top speed is 3,500 rpm; 2,700 and 2,500 rpm are the optional figures. Bar capacity is 75 mm (3 in), or 105 mm (4.1 in) as an option.

For shaft work the tailstock body travels 540 mm (21.2 in), and the quill, 85 mm (3.3 in) in diameter, extends 120 mm (4.7 in). Z travel is 750 mm (29.5 in) and X travel is listed as 250+50 mm (9.8+2 in). Swing over the bed is 612 mm (24.1 in) but swing over the carriage is 400 mm (15.75 in), so the full turning diameter applies to short chucked parts that stay clear of the carriage, not to long shafts. Turret tooling uses 25 mm (1 in) square shanks and 40 mm (1.6 in) round shanks.

Rapids are 24 m/min (945 in/min) in Z and 20 m/min (780 in/min) in X. The machine occupies 3,000 x 1,800 mm (118 x 71 in), stands 1,800 mm (71 in) high and weighs 5,500 kg (12,130 lb).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 500 mm (19.7 in) maximum turning diameter and 700 mm (27.6 in) turning length in a 3,000 x 1,800 mm (118 x 71 in) footprint
  • Tailstock with 540 mm (21.2 in) of body travel and an 85 mm (3.3 in) MT5 quill
  • Spindle options: 22 kW (30 hp) motor, A2-11 nose, 12 or 15 in chuck and 105 mm (4.1 in) bar capacity
  • 12-station turret taking 25 mm (1 in) square and 40 mm (1.6 in) round shanks
  • 24 m/min (945 in/min) Z rapid and 20 m/min (780 in/min) X rapid

Limitations

  • The C axis and live tooling are options, not part of the base machine
  • Live tools, when fitted, are limited to 4,000 rpm and 3.7 kW (5 hp) or 4.5 kW (6 hp)
  • Swing over the carriage is 400 mm (15.75 in), so long shafts are limited to that diameter and not the 500 mm (19.7 in) maximum
  • No Y axis is listed; off-center features call for the A-Turn SYM 300 Y
06

Best For

Shaft work up to 700 mm (27.6 in) long supported by the MT5 tailstock Chuck work up to 500 mm (19.7 in) in diameter Bar work up to 75 mm (3 in), or 105 mm (4.1 in) as an option Cross-drilling and light milling when the optional C axis and live tooling are ordered
07

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Is live tooling standard on the A-Turn 300/700?

No. The listed figures mark the C axis, the live tool speed and the live tool power as optional. When ordered, the C axis indexes in 0.01° steps and the live tools run to 4,000 rpm with a motor of 3.7 kW (5 hp) or 4.5 kW (6 hp). Without the option the machine works in X and Z only.

02 What is the largest part the A-Turn 300/700 can turn?

Maximum turning diameter is 500 mm (19.7 in) and maximum turning length 700 mm (27.6 in). Swing over the bed is 612 mm (24.1 in) and swing over the carriage 400 mm (15.75 in), so a part that has to pass over the carriage cannot use the full turning diameter. Z travel is 750 mm (29.5 in).

03 What spindle options are listed?

The base spindle is 18.5 kW (25 hp) with an A2-8 nose, a 10 in chuck, 75 mm (3 in) bar capacity and 3,500 rpm. Options are a 22 kW (30 hp) motor, an A2-11 nose, 12 and 15 in chucks and 105 mm (4.1 in) bar capacity, with 2,700 and 2,500 rpm given as the optional top speeds. The table does not pair each speed with a chuck or bar size.

04 What is the difference between the A-Turn 300/700 and the A-Turn SYM 300 Y?

The A-Turn SYM 300 Y adds a Y axis, with a rapid of 10 m/min (393 in/min), and is listed at 420 mm (16.5 in) maximum turning diameter, 540 mm (21 in) turning length and 6,500 kg (14,330 lb). The A-Turn 300/700 turns up to 500 mm (19.7 in) by 700 mm (27.6 in), weighs 5,500 kg (12,130 lb) and has no Y axis in its table.

05 What tooling does the turret take?

The turret has 12 stations and takes 25 mm (1 in) square shank tools and 40 mm (1.6 in) round shank tools such as boring bars. Driven tools are available only with the optional live tooling, listed at up to 4,000 rpm.
