Overview
The Campbell Grinder 1000C500 is the smallest of the 1000C series of CNC vertical cylindrical grinders, with a swing diameter of 600 mm (23.6 in) and room for parts 500 mm (19.7 in) tall. Like its larger siblings it grinds OD, ID and faces with the part standing on a rotary table under a traveling column.
The axes are X and Z for the column and slide, C for the table and, where ordered, B for the spindle swivel; the control is a Fanuc 32 with up to 4 axis simultaneous contouring. X and Z use linear motor technology on roller ways with linear glass scales, and Campbell rates both at 5 microns (0.0002 in). Table runout is given as 2.5 microns (0.0001 in), radial and axial, measured 305 mm (12 in) above the table top.
Spindle power on this size is listed as up to 25 HP (18.6 kW). That suits rings, sleeves and bearing components within the 600 mm swing better than heavy stock removal, for which the 1000C1500 and 1000C2000 are listed with up to 60 HP (44.7 kW). Campbell's page for the model also names turning capabilities as a new feature, which lets hard turning and grinding share a setup.
At 3.15 m x 3.43 m x 3.56 m in depth, length and height it is also the easiest of the range to place. The option list is the long one of the series: B-axis, tool and nozzle changer, contouring C-axis, magnetic chuck, hydrostatic table bearing, wireless part probe, and a Siemens 840D control in place of the Fanuc.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Compact for a vertical grinder: 3.15 m x 3.43 m x 3.56 m
- X and Z axes with linear motor technology and linear glass scales, each rated at 5 microns (0.0002 in)
- Table runout of 2.5 microns (0.0001 in), radial and axial
- Turning capabilities are listed as a new feature for this model
Limitations
- Swing is 600 mm (23.6 in) and part height 500 mm (19.7 in), the smallest envelope of the series
- Spindle power is listed only up to 25 HP (18.6 kW)
- The B-axis spindle swivel is an option, although the axes row lists X, Z, B, C

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Parts up to 600 mm (23.6 in) in swing diameter and 500 mm (19.7 in) in height. It is the smallest version in the series table; the next size, the 1000C1000, swings 1,143 mm (45.0 in) and takes parts 1,016 mm (40.0 in) tall.
02
The table lists X, Z, B and C. X and Z are the linear axes, C is the rotary table and B is the spindle swivel, which Campbell marks as optional. The Fanuc 32 control can contour with up to 4 axes at once.
03
Campbell gives 5 microns (0.0002 in) for both the X axis and the Z axis. The C axis table spindle is specified by runout: 2.5 microns (0.0001 in), radial and axial, measured 305 mm (12 in) above the table top. With the optional B axis, the swivel runout is 5 microns (0.0002 in) and its accuracy 10 arc seconds.
04
Campbell's page for this model lists turning capabilities under new features, and turning also appears in the option list of the series catalogue together with milling and drilling. Confirm with Campbell which turning tools, tool changer and control options your part needs.
