Overview

Two spindles cutting at once is the idea behind the Willemin-Macodel 408BMS. It is the 408B bar-milling machine with a multi-axis backworking unit that carries its own spindle and its own tools, so the back of one part is machined while the front of the next is cut from the bar. Willemin-Macodel puts the productivity gain at up to 40%.

The main side matches the 408B. The A axis passes Ø40 mm bar through an A4 cone and indexes at 200 min-1 in milling mode; there is no turning mode. Travels are 250 mm, 200 mm and 310 mm at 40 m/min, the B axis runs from -15° to +100°, and the S1 spindle is HSK-E40 at 30,000 min-1 or 42,000 min-1 in brackets.

The second side is what is new. A further set of linear axes is listed with strokes of 50 mm, 120 mm and 130 mm in X, Y and Z at 20 m/min. The S3 motorized spindle takes HSK-E25 tools at 45,000 min-1 and has its own DTS stabilization, with a magazine of 8 tools. The rework unit presents the part in 3 positions: 0°, 90° and 180°.

Counting both magazines, the maker quotes up to 80 on-board tools: 48 on S1, or 72 in brackets, plus the 8 on S3. A Ø42 mm bar passage is listed as an option, as are a bar feeder and a pneumatic or hydraulic clamping vice for the counter-operation. The control is a FANUC 31i-B5 PLUS iHMI Pro on a 3 m² footprint.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Second S3 spindle, HSK-E25 at 45,000 min-1, machines the back of a part while S1 works the next
  • Maker-quoted productivity gain of up to 40% from the simultaneous rework unit
  • Ø40 mm bar passage, with Ø42 mm listed as an option
  • Rework unit with 3 positions at 0°, 90° and 180°
  • Same 3 m² floor area as the 408B

Limitations

  • The S3 magazine holds 8 tools
  • Backworking strokes are 50 mm, 120 mm and 130 mm at 20 m/min
  • Milling only: the A axis lists 200 min-1 and no turning mode
  • The 42,000 min-1 spindle speed and the 72-tool S1 magazine are bracketed alternatives

Best For

Milled bar parts with substantial work on the cut-off side Series production where cycle time per part matters most Six-sided parts from bar up to Ø40 mm

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does the MS in 408BMS add to the 408B?

A multi-axis automatic backworking unit that machines simultaneously with the main spindle. It has its own linear axes with 50 mm, 120 mm and 130 mm of stroke, an HSK-E25 spindle at 45,000 min-1 and an 8-tool magazine. The 408B lists none of these and the same 250 mm, 200 mm and 310 mm main travels.

02 How many tools does the 408BMS hold?

The S1 magazine holds 48 tools, with 72 in brackets, and the S3 magazine holds 8. Willemin-Macodel's headline figure is a maximum capacity of 80 on-board tools. Tool-to-tool changeover on S1 is 0.8 sec.

03 Can the 408BMS turn?

No turning mode is listed. The A axis is given at 200 min-1 in milling mode only, and the maker describes the machine as dedicated exclusively to milling. The 408MTS is the version with a 6,000 min-1 turning mode, on Ø36 mm bar.

04 What bar size does the 408BMS take?

The maximum bar passage is Ø40 mm through an A4 cone on the horizontal A axis. A Ø42 mm bar passage appears in the list of other options, together with a spindle reduction tube and various clamps.
