Overview

The Nakamura-Tome MX-100 is a compact ATC multitasking machine combining dual-spindle turning with a high-speed B-axis tool spindle and automatic tool changer. The MX-100 uses a dedicated tool spindle with a 36-tool ATC magazine (expandable to 48 or 72 tools) delivering 12,000 RPM standard or 20,000 RPM optional, providing milling performance approaching a small machining center while retaining full CNC turning capability.

The opposed left and right spindles run at 6,000 RPM with 11/7.5 kW motors, with a 15/11 kW high-torque option for the left spindle. Bar capacity is 51 mm standard with a 65 mm option, accepting 6-inch or 8-inch chucks. The B-axis swivels through 190 degrees (+/-95 degrees) for compound drilling, contoured milling, and off-axis features.

The 210 mm Y-axis stroke (+/-105 mm) is significantly wider than most machines in this class. Maximum turning diameter is 305 mm with 834 mm turning length, distance between spindles reaches 1,000 mm. Runs on Fanuc 31i-B5 control with NT Smart Machining suite. Compact footprint of 4,350 x 2,795 mm. New machines price $350,000-$520,000. Methods Machine Tools distributes Nakamura-Tome exclusively in North America.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • ATC-based tool spindle at 12,000 RPM (20,000 optional) delivers milling performance turret live tooling cannot match
  • 210 mm Y-axis stroke is among the widest in this class for large off-center milling
  • 36-tool ATC (expandable to 72) supports complex programs and high-mix production
  • 190-degree B-axis provides angular tool access for compound holes and contoured surfaces
  • Compact footprint for shops upgrading from conventional turning centers
  • Nakamura-Tome build quality and thermal compensation for consistent accuracy

Limitations

  • 11/7.5 kW standard spindles modest for heavy roughing -- spec 15/11 kW option
  • 51 mm standard bar limits bar-fed work unless 65 mm option specified
  • Smaller North American service network through Methods Machine Tools
  • Complex multi-path programming requires skilled programmers and advanced CAM

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new MX-100 cost?

New machines start around $350,000. Adding 20,000 RPM spindle, 72-tool magazine, 65 mm bar option brings it to $420,000-$520,000.

02 MX-100 vs NTRX-300?

MX-100 is more compact with faster tool spindle (12,000-20,000 vs 10,000-12,000 RPM) and wider Y-axis (210 vs 125 mm). NTRX-300 adds lower turret, larger bar (80 mm), more powerful spindles.

03 ATC vs turret live tooling?

ATC tool spindle runs 12,000-20,000 RPM vs turret live tools at 5,000-6,000 RPM for faster removal and better finish.

04 North American distributor?

Methods Machine Tools is the exclusive distributor with technology centers across the US.
