Overview

A Ø255 mm (10 in) spindle bore with a chuck at each end of the headstock defines the Johnford ST-160FX+B+C+Y. It is a turn-mill center for pipe and long hollow parts, with 4,000 mm (157.5 in) between centers and a B-axis milling spindle.

The chucks tell the story. The table lists a front chuck, SMW BBN 600-275, and a rear manual 4-jaw chuck of Ø600 mm. Holding a tube at both ends of the spindle is the normal way to steady long stock that runs through the bore and out of the back of the machine. Bar capacity equals the bore, Ø255 mm (10 in).

A bore that size comes with a slow spindle: 600 rpm at most, from 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) through an auto 4-speed gearbox. Turning diameter is Ø800 mm (31.5 in).

Milling is done by an HSK-A100 spindle with 38 / 62 kW (51.0 / 83.1 hp), 6,000 rpm and a B range of -110°~+90°, fed from a 40-tool magazine. Travel is +741 / -85 mm on X, ±100 mm (±3.9 in) on Y and 4,000 mm (157.5 in) on Z, with the tailstock able to move 3,700 mm (145.7 in). The machine is 11,200 mm (440.9 in) long and weighs 26,700 kg (58,862 lb).
