Overview

One metre of X travel sets the Willemin-Macodel 508MT2 X1000 apart from every other machine in the range. It is the long-bed version of the 508MT2: X is 1,000 mm, Y 200 mm and Z 385 mm on linear motors at 60 m/min, and the cabinet grows to 2,505 mm wide on 5.4 m² of floor.

The bar side is heavier too. Standard bar passage is Ø51 mm through an A6 cone, with 65 mm in brackets, where the 508MT2 starts at Ø42 mm. A torque motor drives the A axis with 72 nm in S1 and 96 nm in S6, at 6,000 min-1 for turning and 200 min-1 for milling.

The long X axis leaves room for more than one working station. Under other options the page lists a turning turret with a Tri-fix interface, (12 positions), a milling speed of (12,000 min-1) and an indexing time of (0.6 sec). Willemin-Macodel says the machine can cut simultaneously with the milling spindle and this turret. A recovery turret with a U-axis travel of (560 mm) and a return spindle turning at (8,000 min-1) on a Cone A4 interface handle the second side, alongside a vice or tailstock.

All of that is optional equipment, printed in brackets, so two machines with this name can be very different. The fixed part is the B-axis milling head, -45° to +115°, with the HSK-E40 spindle and a 48-tool magazine (72 in the bracketed size, 224 positions as an option). The control is a FANUC 31i-B5 PLUS iHMI Pro.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,000 mm of X travel on linear motors at 60 m/min
  • Ø51 mm bar passage as standard, 65 mm in brackets, through an A6 cone
  • Optional 12-position turning turret that can cut at the same time as the milling spindle
  • A axis on a torque motor: 72 nm S1, 96 nm S6, 6,000 min-1 in turning mode
  • Optional return spindle at (8,000 min-1) and recovery turret with (560 mm) of U-axis travel

Limitations

  • Floor area of 5.4 m², against 4 m² for the 508MT2
  • Turning turret, recovery turret and return spindle are all options
  • Y travel is 200 mm despite the long X
  • The table gives no B-axis feed speed for this model

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the 508MT2 X1000 and the 508MT2?

X travel and bar size. The 508MT2 X1000 has 1,000 mm of X, a standard Ø51 mm bar passage on an A6 cone and a floor area of 5.4 m². The 508MT2 has 400 mm of X, Ø42 mm bar on an A4 cone as standard and 4 m². Y and Z are 200 mm and 385 mm on both.

02 Does the 508MT2 X1000 have a turret?

As an option. The page lists a turning turret with a Tri-fix interface, a capacity of (12 positions), a milling speed of (12,000 min-1) and an indexing time of (0.6 sec). The maker describes 12 motorized positions and simultaneous machining with the motorized milling spindle.

03 What backworking equipment is offered on the 508MT2 X1000?

A recovery turret with a U-axis travel of (560 mm), a return spindle on a Cone A4 interface running at (300 min-1) in milling mode and (8,000 min-1) in turning mode, and a pneumatic or hydraulic clamping vice, counter-spindle or tailstock. All are listed under other options.

04 How large a bar can the 508MT2 X1000 machine?

The maximum bar passage is Ø51 mm, with 65 mm in brackets, on an A6 cone. The A axis is driven by a torque motor with 72 nm of S1 torque and 96 nm in S6, and turns at 6,000 min-1 in turning mode.
