Overview

The Willemin-Macodel 408PA is a watchmaking machine first. Willemin-Macodel describes a 6- to 8-axis machining center for milling and turning that produces plates, bridges and movement components in a single cycle, starting from bars, washers or barquettes.

What makes that possible is the automatic vertical-slide machining unit. It lets the part be machined on both faces, turned, milled and routed, with a high-precision micro vice taking over the workpiece. The C-axis divider is listed with 12.2 nm of S1 torque, 16.9 nm in S6 and a maximum of 20.5 nm. It turns at 200 min-1 in milling mode and at 6,000 min-1 in turning mode, or 3,000 min-1 in the EDGE version noted in brackets.

The rest is the familiar frame: 250 mm of X, 200 mm of Y and 310 mm of Z at 40 m/min, and a B axis on a torque motor swinging from -15° to +100° at up to 250 min-1. That B range is the one the 408MT uses, but the 408PA lists no bar passage on a horizontal A axis; its stock arrives through the vertical slide.

Watch plates carry a great many small features, so the magazine counts. It holds 48 tools, with 72 or 96 in brackets, and changes in 0.8 sec. The spindle is HSK-E40 at 30,000 min-1, or 42,000 min-1 in brackets. A FANUC 31i-B5 PLUS iHMI Pro runs the machine, which occupies 3 m².

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Vertical-slide unit for double-sided machining of plates and bridges in a single cycle
  • C-axis divider turning at 6,000 min-1, with 200 min-1 in milling mode
  • B axis from -15° to +100° at up to 250 min-1 with 0.0001° resolution
  • 48 tools, or 72 and 96 in brackets, with a 0.8 sec tool-to-tool change

Limitations

  • C-axis torque tops out at 20.5 nm, with 12.2 nm in S1
  • Travels of 250 mm in X and 310 mm in Z, where the 508PA has 400 mm and 385 mm
  • The EDGE version turns at 3,000 min-1, half the standard figure
  • No bar diameter or plate size is printed for the vertical slide

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the 408PA designed to make?

Plates, bridges and movement components for watches, according to Willemin-Macodel. The machine works from bars, washers or barquettes and completes the part in a single cycle, using an automatic vertical-slide machining unit and a high-precision micro vice for double-sided machining.

02 What are the C-axis figures of the 408PA?

Torque is 12.2 nm in S1 and 16.9 nm in S6, with a maximum of 20.5 nm. Speed is 200 min-1 in milling mode and 6,000 min-1 in turning mode. The bracketed note gives 3,000 min-1 for the EDGE version.

03 How does the 408PA compare with the 508PA?

The 508PA is the linear-motor version with 400 mm of X and 385 mm of Z at 60 m/min, and its B axis covers -45° to +115°. The 408PA has 250 mm of X, 310 mm of Z, 40 m/min and a B axis from -15° to +100°. Both list the same C-axis torque and turning speeds.

04 Which spindle and control does the 408PA have?

An HSK-E40 motorized spindle at 30,000 min-1, with HSK-A40 or CAPTO C4 and 42,000 min-1 in brackets, and integrated DTS thermal stabilization. The control is a FANUC 31i-B5 PLUS iHMI Pro.
