Overview

The Weldon Midas is a CNC cylindrical grinder with 16 in (406 mm) of swing and 25 in (635 mm) between centers, offered in four versions that differ at the wheel. The S-2 and A-2 have a 20 hp (14.9 kW) motor and a wheel 20 in (508 mm) in diameter by 4.0 in (102 mm) wide. The S-3 and A-3 step up to 25 hp (18.6 kW) and a 24 in (610 mm) by 5.0 in (127 mm) wheel. The wheelhead angle is factory set at 0° or 30°.

A turret wheelhead is the option that changes what the machine can do. Each wheel position has its own integral 31.5 hp (23.5 kW) spindle motor, and the turret indexes to +/- 1.5 arc second, so a second wheel can be brought to the part without taking it out of the centers. The turret machine weighs 21,600 lb (9,798 kg), against 19,800 lb (8,981 kg) for the S-2 and A-2 and 20,100 lb (9,117 kg) for the S-3 and A-3.

Under the table, Z is a FANUC linear motor and X runs on precision ground preloaded ballscrews, with 15.25 in (387 mm) of wheel slide travel and 43 in (1,092 mm) of worktable travel. The guideways are hardened and ground rails of the cross-roller type. Wheel speed is infinitely variable around the nominal 8,500 SFPM, which lets surface speed be held as the wheel wears down in diameter.

Parts up to 300 lb (136 kg) go between #5 Morse centers. The workhead has a 6 in A2 (ASME) nose, a 1.0625 in (27 mm) through hole and a 5.0 hp (3.7 kW) FANUC AC servo, infinitely variable from 0 to 900 rpm. The tailstock quill retracts 1.5 in (38 mm) by manual lever. A 24 in (610 mm) swing is available as an option.

The machine is 130 x 91 x 93 in (3,302 x 2,311 x 2,362 mm) (W x D x H) on a welded steel Shear Damper base, and it needs 480 VAC, 3-phase, 60 Hz power and 5 SCFM of air at 80 psi.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Optional turret wheelhead with an integral 31.5 hp (23.5 kW) spindle motor per wheel position and +/- 1.5 arc second indexing accuracy
  • Two wheel packages: 20 hp (14.9 kW) with a 20 in (508 mm) x 4.0 in (102 mm) wheel on the S-2 and A-2, or 25 hp (18.6 kW) with a 24 in (610 mm) x 5.0 in (127 mm) wheel on the S-3 and A-3
  • FANUC linear motor Z axis, ballscrew X axis and cross-roller guideways on hardened and ground rails
  • Infinitely variable wheel speed around a nominal 8,500 SFPM
  • Rated for 300 lb (136 kg) between centers, with an optional 24 in (610 mm) swing

Limitations

  • Distance between centers is 25 in (635 mm), which rules out longer shafts
  • The wheelhead angle is factory set at 0° or 30° and is not a shop adjustment
  • The turret wheelhead and the 24 in (610 mm) swing are options, and the turret raises weight to 21,600 lb (9,798 kg)
  • Tailstock quill retraction is 1.5 in (38 mm) by manual lever
  • Requires 480 VAC, 3-phase power and a floor that takes at least 19,800 lb (8,981 kg)

Best For

Parts that need more than one wheel in a single setup, using the optional turret wheelhead Wide plunge grinds with the 5.0 in (127 mm) wheel of the S-3 and A-3 Shafts and spindles up to 25 in (635 mm) between centers and 300 lb (136 kg) Production work where variable wheel speed keeps surface speed steady as the wheel wears Larger diameters with the optional 24 in (610 mm) swing

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the Midas S-2, A-2, S-3 and A-3?

The table separates them by wheel package and weight. The S-2 and A-2 have a 20 hp (14.9 kW) wheel motor, a 20 in (508 mm) dia x 4.0 in (102 mm) wide wheel and weigh 19,800 lb (8,981 kg). The S-3 and A-3 have 25 hp (18.6 kW), a 24 in (610 mm) dia x 5.0 in (127 mm) wide wheel and weigh 20,100 lb (9,117 kg). The table does not spell out what the S and A letters mean, so ask Weldon when specifying.

02 What does the turret option add to the Midas?

A turret wheelhead with an integral 31.5 hp (23.5 kW) spindle motor at each wheel position and an indexing accuracy of +/- 1.5 arc second. Machine weight with the turret is 21,600 lb (9,798 kg). It is an option, not part of the standard machine.

03 How heavy a part can the Midas carry?

300 lb (136 kg) between centers. Standard swing is 16 in (406 mm), with 24 in (610 mm) as an option, and the distance between centers is 25 in (635 mm). Both the workhead and the tailstock take #5 Morse centers.

04 What kind of slides and drives does the Midas have?

The Z axis is driven by a FANUC linear motor and the X axis by precision ground preloaded ballscrews. The guideways are hardened and ground rails, cross-roller type. Wheel slide travel is 15.25 in (387 mm) and worktable travel is 43 in (1,092 mm). Table drive motors are 1.9 hp (1.4 kW) FANUC AC digital servos under a FANUC 0i-TF control.

05 How does the Midas compare with the Gold and the Altaira on wheel power?

The Gold has a 15 hp (11.2 kW) wheel motor and the Altaira 25 hp (18.6 kW). The Midas spans the gap: 20 hp (14.9 kW) on the S-2 and A-2 and 25 hp (18.6 kW) on the S-3 and A-3. On weight, the Gold is 15,500 lb (7,031 kg), the Midas 19,800 lb (8,981 kg) or 20,100 lb (9,117 kg), and the Altaira 22,000 lb (9,979 kg).
